  • Falun Gong Practitioner Ms. Li Fengqin Tortured to Death

On the morning of October 11, 2005, Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Li Fengqin from Yushu City, Jilin Province was illegally arrested by National Security agents. They extorted money from her, beat her, and brutally force-fed her. After ten days she was near death, and her family members sent her to the hospital. The doctor said they couldn't do anything to save her. Ms. Li died on the afternoon of January 30, 2006. She was only in her 50s.

On the morning of October 11, 2005, Ms. Li Fengqin was at her friend Ms. Yang Xiuhua's home. Suddenly several National Security agents stormed in, arrested her and took her to the National Security Group Office in Yushu City Police Department. Policeman Qi Li (male) kicked Ms. Li very hard down to the floor. As a result, her right leg could not support her weight. At around 2:00 p.m., policeman Zhang Deqing (male) pushed her into a police vehicle. On the way to the Yushu City Detention Center, Ms. Li Fengqin felt extreme pain in her chest and stomach area, and she could barely breathe. Upon arriving at the Detention Center, she could not get out of the vehicle by herself. Policeman Chai Wenge dragged her into the detention center with help from another policeman, Zhang Deqing. Ms. Li collapsed on the floor. She was dragged and carried into the cell by prisoners.

Ms. Li Fengqin began a hunger strike to protest her illegal detention. On the seventh day of her hunger strike, prison guards dragged her to the clinic to be force-fed. The doctor who conducted the force-feeding has the last name of Li. They tied her on a stretcher, forced a tube down through her nose, and fed her some preserved vegetable soup and corn meal with powered milk. The next day when they carried Ms. Li into the clinic room, guard Teng Qingling (female) was assisting. With both hands tied up, Ms. Li Fengqin said, "Please do not force-feed me any more. The food will be vomited out later anyway, why bother torturing me?" Teng Qingling replied, "Why would we listen to you?"

On the afternoon of the tenth day of her hunger strike, Ms. Li could not sit up any more. The doctor came to check on her, said nothing, and left. They let her family pick her up around 6:00 p.m., and she was carried out by prisoners.

Ms. Li Fengqin started vomiting a green liquid upon returning home. Her family sent her to the Yushu City Hospital. The doctor could not feel her pulse or measure her blood pressure; her pupils were dilated, they could not draw any blood from her, nor could they inject a needle into her veins. Her abdomen was bloated. The doctor said she was dying with late stage intestinal obstruction and that an operation was not feasible. He told her family to prepare for her funeral.

Ms. Li Fengqin lost consciousness later. Her family transferred her to the Second Hospital of Changchun City Medical University. The doctors there could not find any blood pressure, and tried to rescue her for 14 hours. Ms. Li was sustained on intravenous injections, including human blood protein. She died on the afternoon of January 30, 2006, after her family spent at least seventy to eighty thousands yuan on emergency treatment.

At the beginning of October 2005, the Yushu City National Security Agents and policemen from Zhengyang Station arrested ten Falun Gong practitioners: Ms. Li Fengqin, Ms. Yang Xiuhua, Mr. Wen Fenghai, Ms. Gao Yunlan, Ms. Yang Shuqin, Mr. Su Yucai, Ms. Gao Fenglian, Ms. Chen Shujie, Mr. Yang Yongchen, and Mr. Yang Changsong. They each were extorted out of two- to ten-thousand yuan.

Brutal Torture and Death of Falun Gong Practitioners at the 3rd Prison in Tianshui City, Gansu Province

Right now, twelve Falun Gong practitioners are being illegally detained at the 3rd Prison in Qincheng District, Tianshui City, Gansu Province. The guards abuse the practitioners ceaselessly, both physically and mentally, desperately attempting to "reform" practitioners. Their superiors have assigned them a "reform" quota which gives the guards the impetus to be so brutal. They torture the practitioners in attempts to force them to give up their belief in Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance. In late 2005, seven practitioners including Liu Zhirong were transferred from the Dingxi Prison to the 3rd Prison in Tianshui City. The guards in Ward 1 tortured Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Liu Zhirong to death before January 14, 2006. The prison authorities cremated Mr. Liu's body without notifying his family and sent his ashes to the Qingyang City Mortuary, where Liu Zhirong's residence is located. They claimed that Liu Zhirong died from suicide.

Prison head Wei Xinggang, prison Administration Section head Yao Wenqiang and Zhang Jianhua, the political head of Ward 4, adhered to Jiang Zemin's persecution policy against Falun Gong - "ruining Falun Gong practitioners' reputations; bankrupting them financially and destroying them physically." Such a policy amounts to genocide of Falun Gong practitioners.

Certain guards got together and planned how they would persecute Falun Gong practitioners. They played videos slandering Falun Gong and its founder. They coerced practitioners to write statements to "renounce" Falun Gong, and shocked practitioners with high-voltage electric batons if they refused to write such statements. The guards deprived the practitioners of sleep for days on end, and verbally abused and insulted the practitioners. The prison authorities encouraged the guards to beat and kick practitioners. During a meeting held specifically to attack Falun Gong, practitioner Wang Yongming refused to listen to Falun Gong being slandered. Zhang Jianhua, political head of Group 4, and Wen Yanming, a group head, encouraged group heads Zhang Yanming, Liu Jiangtao and Wang Tao to savagely beat practitioner Wang and shock him with electric batons. They held him in solitary confinement for more than one month during which time they handcuffed him, hung him up and deprived him of sleep for more than 30 hours. They tried to force him to read Falun Gong-slandering books and write a guarantee statement. Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Wang Yongming was tortured until his whole body became numb. His hands and feet especially hurt and were extremely painful and swollen.

The guards also exhausted all torture tactics at their disposal to try to force practitioner Yang Jingchun to write a guarantee statement.

Since March 2005, Falun Gong practitioner Wang Yongming has refused to "reform" and has resisted the persecution. The guards told him, "An arm cannot compete with a leg;" "Just do what the government wants you to do;" and "[you should] try your best to get a sentence reduction so that you can go home." Mr. Wang Yongming clarified the truth to them and told them, "Goodness will be rewarded and evildoing will be punished." After he said that, six guards jumped on him and put him in handcuffs and shackles. They shocked him with four electric batons simultaneously. One electric baton had a charge of 300,000 volts. Wang Yongming shouted, "Falun Dafa is good!" The guards put the electric batons inside his mouth and shocked his tongue and upper palate. They also shocked his head, neck, hands and other body parts. They ordered inmates to torture him at night and forbade him to sleep. Mr. Wang was forced to stand in the middle of the floor, and he was yelled at and intimidated when he dozed off. The guards and inmates tortured him for five days straight once.

While they shocked Wang Yongming with electric batons, they also told the inmates to beat him. In the evening, the inmates kicked his handcuffs until they cut into his wrists; they kicked his chest until he almost could not breathe from the searing pain. They threw him into a wall and took a break before continuing to beat him. Wang Yongming was held in solitary confinement for 50 days. For a while he slept on the floor, only because he persisted in his belief in Truth, Compassion, Tolerance. His family is not allowed to visit him and the captors have adamantly blocked further information about his situation.

The jailers at Group 4 of the 3rd Prison were instigated by political head Zhang Jianhua, Liu Jiangtao, head of Group 4, Wen Yanming, a group head, Zhang Yanming and Wang Tao to cruelly torture practitioner Shang Junbin for refusing to write a guarantee statement. The perpetrators used the "cartwheel" tactic, taking turns torturing him. They forced him to stand for long periods of time; they also humiliated him, spread rumors about him, and otherwise mentally abused him.

The guards tried to coerce practitioner Li Chunsheng to watch slandering videos. Li Chunsheng refused. The evildoers turned up the volume and did not allow him to return to the detention room for a noon break, forcing him to stay in the office with the video and eat. In the evening, another group of perpetrators prevented Mr. Li from sleeping, and tortured him until 2:00 a.m.

The perpetrators also closely monitored practitioner Yang Jingchun. They didn't let him talk to others. They followed him even when he went to the restroom or when he washed dishes or brushed his teeth. They did not allow him to speak or have contact with others. They also forced his family to stay at the prison and verbally barrage him around the clock in an attempt to destroy his will.

Wei County, Hebei Province Officials Burned Mr. Zhang Shunjie with a Red-hot Poker

Mr. Zhang Shunjie is a 40-year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Weizhou Town in Wei County, Hebei Province. On July 20, 1999, the Chinese Communist regime started to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. Because Mr. Zhang persisted in his belief, spoke righteous words, and rescued a fellow practitioner, he suffered severe persecution.

In June 2000, Mr. Zhang Shunjie went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong and clarify the truth. When he sat on the stone sidewalk to take a break at Tiananmen Square, plainclothes policemen illegally arrested him using force. The police in the car made him raise his hands. Then they lifted his shirt and beat his chest hard four or five rounds. The beating lasted over twenty minutes. When the police beat people, often the damage can't be seen on the surface, but they inflict internal injuries. Because Mr. Zhang refused to give his name, the police pushed him out of the car. After his release, he couldn't straighten his torso, he vomited blood, and he had a problem with nosebleeds. After the incident, Mr. Zhang couldn't perform any heavy labor. As a bricklayer, he used to stack bricks at a construction site, so he had to change his occupation to something less physically demanding. He bought a used motorcycle to make a living.

On the night of February 25, 2002, after Zhang Shunjie had rescued a persecuted local practitioner, a group of men followed him home. (It was later learned that they were from the Xihe team of the Weizhou Town Police Station of Xiheying Town, Wei County and the Xiguan Village Party Committee.) They pounded on the door, threw stones into the yard, and then broke into his home. They unlawfully arrested Mr. Zhang and took him to the office of the Xihe team in Xiheying Town.

Gao Dequan, hired by Xiheying Town, violently slapped Mr. Zhang. The party secretary, Wang Sui, used a broom to hit the back of his hands repeatedly. They tried to force him to admit he had participated in rescuing another practitioner and to give the location of the rescued practitioner. Then they pushed him into a room and a group of men surrounded and beat him. When he fell, they pulled him up to continue the torture. This ordeal continued until 2:00 a.m. When they became tired, they locked Mr. Zhang in another room. He was handcuffed to a table so that he could neither stand nor squat.

The next morning, after people went to work, a vicious townsperson named Wang Xizhen used a poker to hit Mr. Zhang. Later, Wang heated the poker red-hot and used it to sear Mr. Zhang's hands. His hands still have those scars. Jia Zhongcheng used a lighted cigarette to burn Zhang Shunjie's face. He also poured boiling water on his head. A person wearing a judicial robes yelled, "I will make your family suffer a great deal!"

After 9:00 a.m., a police officer from the local police station made Mr. Zhang hold onto a chair, then he handcuffed him. He took a big electric baton, raised Mr. Zhang's clothes from the back, and brutally shocked his back. He thrust the baton into his pants and his mouth. Mr. Zhang's mouth was burnt black. The officer then handcuffed his hands behind his back, which caused excruciating pain.

At noon, they handcuffed Zhang Shunjie to a utility pole. Mr. Zhang started a hunger strike to protest the persecution. Nie from the police station fastened a heavy chain around Mr. Zhang's waist. Police officer Wang beat him so badly with an electric baton that it broke in two.

In the afternoon, they continued the torture. After placing a book on Mr. Zhang's chest, Wang practiced boxing on Mr. Zhang. He also slapped his face with the book, causing Mr. Zhang's nose to bleed. But this vicious person didn't stop there. He took a wooden stick and continued the beating. After the stick broke, he fiercely jabbed the sharp tip of the stick into Mr. Zhang's chest. He pounded Mr. Zhang's feet with a heavy object and poured cold water over his chest. This incident took place in the cold of winter.

That night Zhang Shunjie was nearly unconscious. His hands were swollen from the torture, and his hands and body had been badly burned. He had injuries everywhere. When he began to perspire heavily, the perpetrators became scared. They got a doctor to check his pulse. Mr. Zhang's heartbeat was abnormal even though he had had no history of heart disease before he was tortured.

The next day the police asked Mr. Zhang's family for 5,000 yuan to bail him out. When his family came and saw how badly he had been tortured, they said, "Our family didn't commit any crime, but you did this to him while he was in your custody, and you still want money from us?" When the police realized that they couldn't get any money his family, they put Mr. Zhang into a detention center, where he endured more persecution. Among other tortures, the perpetrators poured cold water onto the floor of a room, striped off his clothes, and made him lie on the floor. They beat his buttocks with a shoe and they pushed his head into a barrel. Fifty days later, police extorted close to 5,000 yuan from him before releasing him.

At the end of October 2002, before the Sixteenth National Party Congress, Fan, a member of the joint security team of the Weizhou Town Police Station, led several other men to break into Mr. Zhang's home again. They blocked him at the door, beat him, arrested him, and took him to the office of the joint security team. They left him handcuffed for two days and nights. Mr. Zhang was sent to a brainwashing center organized by local 610 Office and held for more than 20 days.

The continual, inhuman persecution over several years injured Mr. Zhang Shunjie severely. In February 2005, he suddenly lost consciousness at home and was sent to the hospital. An x-ray showed that he had had a serious stroke. Because of the power of Falun Gong and practitioner's righteous thoughts, he recovered very quickly. Even the doctors and nurses said that it was a miracle.

Later, for no apparent reason, Mr. Zhang lost consciousness several times while at home or on the street. This greatly affected his daily work and life. The evil communist party has persecuted a good person and left him injured. His wife doesn't have a job, and he has three young children to support.

The Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners by the Yuhua District Court in Shijiazhuang City

On September 6, 2005, Shijiazhuang Falun Gong practitioner Sun Li was illegally arrested. After the police found some copies of the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party and Falun Gong truth-clarifying flyers in her house, they charged her with unfounded crimes in violation of Chinese law. Toward the end of December 2005, Shijiazhuang's Yuhua District Court conducted a secret court hearing. Falun Gong practitioner Duan Shengsheng, who was arrested the same day as Sun Li, was also at the court hearing. Sun Li was at that time in extremely weak physical condition. She is currently being incarcerated at the Number 2 Detention Center in Shijiazhuang. She strongly demands her immediate and unconditional release.

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Sun Li was once detained at the Honglou Hotel, a makeshift detention center that police in the Yuhua Precinct are using. They occupy an entire floor and torture good people there without restraint. Facing police brutality, Sun Li refused to answer any questions or to sign any document. The police said, "Others have confessed and told us about you; why don't you confess?" Sun Li refused to answer.

There is a certain torture device called a "metal chair" that is usually used on murderers and drug addicts. It is used to prevent dangerous criminals from doing anything violent. Sun Li, a kind woman in her 50's, was forced to sit in this chair for ten days and nights. They intended to deprive her of sleep. When she was extremely sleepy and foggy-headed, the perpetrators forced her to admit her so-called "crime." This is clearly a case of extracting a confession under torture.

During the court hearing, Sun Li told the judge and the police that what she wrote during the torture and interrogation was completely untrue and must be revoked. She said, "I have done nothing dangerous to people or society; believing in 'Truth, Compassion, Tolerance' and wanting to be a good person is not wrong." She also said that the Nine Commentaries and Falun Gong flyers are beneficial for society, and that people have the right to know the truth.

An ignorant judge actually compared the Nine Commentaries and the Falun Gong truth-clarification materials to guns and ammunition. He said, "If we found those materials at your house, you are a criminal to be sentenced to jail."

Duan Shengsheng was charged because the police found some electronic components, which they said was used in "TV channel tapping." (Note: Some Falun Gong practitioners inside China have employed the peaceful method of tapping into television signals to broadcast the truth about Falun Gong.) Duan Shengsheng has a business repairing electronic devices; the components were for daily use in his job.

Shijiazhuang City's Yuhua District Court and agents from the local 610 Office repeatedly worked together to plot illegal trials of Falun Gong practitioners. Using deceit and other dirty tactics, they sentenced many Falun Gong practitioners to prison.

In the spring of 2001, the Yuhua District Court sentenced Lu Shuxin to eight years in prison. Lu Shuxin was a teacher in Shijiazhuang's Tatan School. Now Lu Shuxin is incarcerated at the Baoding Prison, 77 July 1 East Road, Baoding City, Hebei Province. Although neither Lu's family nor his employer was informed about the hearing, a Yanzhao Evening News report still called it an "open trial."

In November 2002, Shijiazhuang's Jingjing Village practitioner Ms. Bai Yuzhi demanded that the court allow her to hire a defense lawyer. The court couldn't find any excuse to say no, so they gave Ms. Bai's family ten days to find a "satisfactory" lawyer. Since Jiang Zemin's regime warned all lawyers not to defend Falun Gong practitioners, the family could not find a lawyer to take the case.

In December 2002, the court held a secret trial without the defendant's family members present. In the beginning of January 2003, Bai Yuzhi started a hunger strike (no food and water) to protest the illegal sentence. The hunger strike was undertaken at Shijiazhuang's Number 2 Detention Center. In February 2003, Ms. Bai's condition became critical. Her family members appeared before the court to ask for her release on medical parole. After the court and the detention center pushed the responsibility back and forth, which effectively delayed any response, the court turned down the family's request and denied them further visitation rights. In March 2003, Ms. Bai was once again in critical condition. Her family again went to the court to ask for her release on medical parole. Not only did the courts ignore the family's request, they handed down a five-year sentence without any legal grounds. They didn't even inform the family about the sentence.

The Relentless Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioner Li Xinglian

Ms. Li Xinglian, 66 years old, is a retired worker. She lived in the dormitory of the Communist Party Committee and the city government of Suining City, Sichuan Province (Yucai Road #26). Since the Communist regime launched the cruel persecution against Falun Gong on July 20, 1999, Ms. Li has suffered from relentless persecution.

Before Ms. Li started to practice Falun Gong, she suffered from many diseases such as nephritis, hypertension, stomach illness, serious rheumatism, intestinal illness, Menill's syndrome and depression. In addition, her husband Mr. Chen Shenggen, a former governmental official, died in 1994. The mental trauma resulting from her husband's death caused Ms. Li's condition to further deteriorate. As a result, she became unable to support herself and lost her interest in living.

Fortunately, in 1996, Ms. Li discovered Falun Gong and started to conduct herself according to the principle of "Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance" taught by the Teacher of Falun Gong. Miraculously, all of her diseases disappeared in less than two months and she could walk so comfortably that even some young persons could not keep up with her.

Ms. Li was targeted when the persecution against Falun Gong started on July 20, 1999.

On June 25, 2000, Li Xinglian went to Chuanshan Park to practice the Falun Gong exercises, for which the police illegally arrested her and detained her for two days. Later they extorted 10 yuan from her as a fee for her living in custody.

On July 24 of the same year, Ms. Li went to the Baique Temple to practice Falun Gong. There, police officers Xiao, Duan and Yang Renfang from the National Security Group arrested her. Ms. Li was sent to the Wujiawan Detention Center, where she was detained for 11 days and forced to pay 100-yuan as a fee for her living expenses there. She was also pressured to write a guarantee statement declaring that she would give up Falun Gong, but she refused to do so because she felt that Falun Gong had saved her life.

On September 26, 2002, the head of the Chengxi Police Station, Hu Shuangqing, along with policemen Tan Youyun and Tian Guilin, went to Ms. Li's home to arrest her. Without any legal documentation, they ransacked her home. During the arrest, the policemen handcuffed Ms. Li so violently that her hands were seriously injured and started to bleed. The scars remain to this day. The police tried to cover her mouth to stop her from speaking, and she suffered serious internal injury. The policemen threatened Li Xinglian openly, "Let's kill her, once and for all." The head of the police station, Hu Shuangqing, died in a traffic accident in October 2003, as a result of karmic retribution.

This time, the policemen took away Ms. Li's Falun Gong books and 6 audiotapes of music for the Falun Gong exercises. They also took 200 yuan that Ms. Li had left on a desk. During the whole process, they did not present any legal documents. They then sent Ms. Li to the Linquansi Detention Center, where she was held for one month. During the detention, Ms. Li was cruelly beaten and was not allowed to sleep. After she was released, the local residential committee demanded that she write a guarantee statement to denounce Falun Gong, but she refused. Then they dispatched some people to monitor her activities. In the past five years, more than 100 people have been dispatched to do this job.

In June 2003, Hu Shuangqing managed to arrest Ms. Li, by forcing her son Chen Hong to lead them to the homes of her parents, her parents-in-law and other relatives in order to locate and arrest her. They also slandered Ms. Li as an "anti-revolutionary," and threatened that her relatives and friends had to report to them as soon as they saw her. Otherwise, they would be implicated. Her friends and relatives were very distressed as a result of suffering through this ordeal.

On November 5, 2003, policemen Zhou Jian and Xu Xingming from the Chengxi Police Station and another person, Tian Guilin, went to Ms. Li's home to arrest her. They forced her to open her door, ransacked her home and carried her into their vehicle. Then they detained Ms. Li in the Linquansi Detention Center for 20 days and forced her family members to give them 2,000 yuan as a fine. They threatened that she would be sentenced to 2 years in prison. To prevent this from happening, her family members made a concession by inviting the policemen to dinner and giving them some money. Then Ms. Li was released home.

On February 17, 2004, the policemen once again tried to break into Li Xinglian's home, but Ms. Li refused to open the door. However, they never gave up their efforts to arrest her and went to her home to harass her on numerous occasions. Seeing no other options available to her, Ms. Li left home and became homeless so that she could not be located and arrested. She has not returned even to this day. During this time, the police and persons from the local residential committee have often tried to coax her into returning home, so they could arrest her again. Later, Wen Shiping, the director of the Gaosheng Street office of the local residential committee, threatened Ms. Li, saying that they would cancel her pension if she continued to stay away from home. Ms. Li knew that they were trying to trick her, so she did not dare go home. The authorities cancelled Ms. Li's pension in December 2004.

The captors sent them to the fourth floor of the Huadu Hotel, Gaobeidian City. Many Gaobeidian City Police Department agents were temporarily transferred to torture the practitioners: they deprived the practitioners of sleep for three days in a row, beat, cursed and threatened them. A practitioner named Li Gang was shocked to the point of incontinence and went into a coma for several hours. Later the practitioners were separately sent to Zhuozhou City Detention Center. (This incident is part of a retaliation plot on the part of the police after the recent rape of two female Falun Gong practitioners in Hebei Province was publicized worldwide.)

To resist the persecution, several practitioners staged a hunger strike. They have stopped drinking water and eating for over ten days and have become extremely weak. Yang Yugang and other personnel from the National Security Team send the practitioners to the Emergency Section of Erkang Hospital daily for force-feeding. One practitioner's life is in peril now. Detention center warden Yang Yugang and other personnel said, "If he dies, just send him to the crematory." One practitioner managed to escape from the hospital. His whereabouts is unknown. Another practitioner is being severely tortured and his face is badly disfigured from torture.
