  • Mr. Su Anzhou from Lanzhou Province Tortured, His Wife and Son Died Due to Persecution

Mr. Su Anzhou, 56, a retiree from Lanxi Locomotive Depot, Lanzhou Railway Bureau, Lanzhou Province, lives in the residential area of the Railway Material Factory. His wife, Ms. Geng Cuifang, ran a successful small business. Their son, Mr. Su Wei, a handsome boy at five feet nine inches tall, was born in 1985. They lived a very happy life until July 20, 1999, when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started persecuting Falun Gong. Their family was torn apart by the CCP and police. Torture claimed the lives of Mr. Su's wife and son. Mr. Su Anzhou developed colon cancer after being tortured at the 11th Ward of the Lanzhou Prison, Gansu Province. He is currently at the forced labor hospital for treatment.

Wife Died Due to Persecution by Police

In late December 2000, Mr. Su and Ms. Geng went to Beijing to clarify the truth about Falun Gong. After they were sent back to Lanzhou by the CCP, Ms. Geng was illegally imprisoned at the 15th Team of Xiguoyuan Detention Center in Lanzhou City. She was released in October 2001. Mr. Su was illegally imprisoned at the Railway Detention Center for 15 days and then sent to Pin'antai Forced Labor Camp in Lanzhou City for a year. During that time, their 16-year-old son had to stay at home by himself.

In 2002, Mr. Su tapped into television broadcasts to clarify the truth about the persecution of Falun Gong. The police then went after him. On June 13, 2002, under the direction of the 610 Office, CCP secretary at Lanxi Locomotive Depot Sun Binzhou, Deputy CCP Secretary Tang Deyue and Chang Guohua ordered security guards Liu Jicun, Han Rong, and Shang Min to monitor Mr. Su's home. After monitoring for an entire night, they saw him return home at 6:00 a.m. They arrested him and took him to the security office of Lanxi Locomotive Depot.

Afterwards, these officials and police from the Lanzhou Railway Police Department, including policeman Guo Guangxian, knocked on the door of his apartment on the sixth floor. Ms. Geng refused to open up. Pressured by police presence, she tried to escape by climbing down a rope, but the rope broke and she fell to the ground. She was severely injured.

If she had been taken for emergency treatment, Ms. Geng Cuifang could have been saved. But the police did not do anything for her. They just shut down the whole building and did not allow anyone to approach her. Then they took her keys from her pocket and opened the apartment door to ransack it. They took the couple's personal deposit book that had over ten thousand yuan in it, a salary deposit book, and jewelry. Ms. Geng was left laying on the ground, exposed to the baking sun. She eventually died in great pain. She was only 48 years old.

Four days later, the Railway Police Department cremated her body to destroy any evidence. They did not allow family members to take a picture or examine her body. At the cremation site, her sister said sorrowfully, "She practiced Falun Gong only for healing illness, being fit, and being a good person. Why was she treated like this?" But even before she could finish her sentence, the police dragged her away. The cremation process was completed in less then seven minutes.

Faxed instructions from Deputy Governor Xu stated that "Lanxi Locomotive Depot is responsible for the funeral," and Sun Binzhou, Tang Deyue, Chang Guohua, Liu Jicun, and Guo Guangxian, forced Mr. Su Anzhou, who was temporarily released to go home to take care of his wife's funeral, to pay six thousand "yuan" for the funeral expenses. His family members were threatened and prohibited from talking about Falun Gong. Their wreaths were not accepted for the funeral, and they were not even allowed to attend the funeral. On top of all this, Sun Binzhou and others used the funeral money to treat themselves to a banquet.

    Ten Years in Prison

In August 2002, the CCP arrested Mr. Su Anzhou again. The Qilihe Court in Lanzhou City sentenced him to prison for his involvement in tapping into television broadcasts.

In mid September, he was imprisoned at a location in Lanzhou City, where he was brutally tortured. Policemen He Bo and Wei Dong bound him into an iron chair, put a steel helmet on his head, and locked his wrists in two customized handcuffs that could be tightened by adjusting screws. As they tightened the screws, the handcuffs became so tight that they severely distorted his wrists. They also kept putting more thick books under his arms, which caused him great pain.

Mr. Su was tortured like this for 72 hours. The torture could barely be seen by looking at his wrist: There were only some marks left by the handcuffs and swelling. But deep in his bones, the pain was unbearable. After the torture, he had severe pain for a month, followed by numbness for several months.

Their son, Mr. Su Wei, who was less than 18 years old at the time, was left at home alone. As he could not manage by himself at home, he left home. He eventually became sick with lung cancer. In June 2006, his situation became very bad. Relatives and neighbors voluntarily donated money and cared for him. They requested compassionate medical leave for Mr. Su Anzhou, so that he could care for his son. Mr. Su Anzhou was at the forced labor hospital for treatment for colon cancer at that time, so he met the requirements for compassionate medical leave. However, the Lanzhou Prison refused to release him because he did not give up Falun Gong practice. The prison sent a few wardens to guard him when he went home on July 26, 2006, to check on his son. Mr. Su Wei's whole body was swollen and disfigured. His legs were full of water, which kept oozing out. He could not walk, and there was a terrible smell in the room. Seeing his son like this, Mr. Su Anzhou said nothing but just used his hands to touch his son's head. Mr. Su Wei said to the wardens, "Please, I beg you to release my dad." Everyone watching this was in tears, but the wardens still took Mr. Su Anzhou away. Mr. Su Wei died at home on August 4, 2006.

Mr. Su Anzhou's family was broken apart by the CCP simply for practicing "Truthfulness, Benevolence, Forbearance." In addition to enduring the pain of losing his wife and son, Mr. Su Anzhou also had to face physical torture and the mental pressure to give up his belief. The long-term torture damaged his health. He was taken in and out of the forced labor hospital in 2005 but has been there since 2006. According to people who are familiar with his case, he has colon cancer, but the warden claimed that it was a colorectal polyp. Mr. Su Anzhou remains in the forced labor hospital.

Family Members Attempted to Rescue the Arrested Practitioners in Jinlin City, Jinlin Province

Five practitioners from Jilin City--Ms. Wang Liqiu, Mr. Zhao Guoxing, Ms. Mu Chunhong, Ms. Zhao Yingjie, and Mr. Liu Yuhe--were arrested on February 12, 2007. The police brought them to Jilin City Police Department and tortured them. Officer Di Shigang force-fed Ms. Wang with eight bottles of dark mustard oil, causing her to lose consciousness. Officer Di then doused her with cold water to revive her and force-fed her again. Ms. Wang is now exhibiting symptoms of heart disease.

The members of these practitioners' families have been going to extraordinary lengths to try to rescue them. The members of several families went to the Jilin Municipal Police Station on April 10 and 17, attempting to win the practitioners' release.

On April 10, members of Ms. Wang's, Mr. Zhao's, and Ms. Mu's families went to the police station and heard that provincial government officials were accepting appointments from citizens that day. Members of six practitioners' families went to the city government's Appeals Section and asked Chief Xing Tieying (male) and Xiao Xuemei (female) to arrange appointments for them. The families wanted to tell the provincial government officials of the practitioners' horrible experiences. Both Xing and Xiao answered, "No one will touch the Falun Gong matter."

The family members replied, "Then why are the police arresting practitioners? Once they arrest them, no one cares anymore?"

Ms. Wang's 77-year-old father begged Xing and Xiao for assistance, but neither of them showed any sympathy. The family members persisted until 3:00 p.m. before they finally left in disappointment.

On April 17, at a little after 9:00 a.m., eight members of Ms. Wang's, Mr. Zhao's, and Ms. Mu's families returned to the Jilin Municipal Police Station to meet with the director, Liu Peizhu (male). The personnel of the Secretarial Section claimed that Liu was on a business trip. The family members felt they had no choice but to contact the State Security Section. They made several calls, but no one answered the phone.

No one at the State Security Section would receive them, so the family members stood at the entrance and asked whoever came out the door, "Are you from the State Security Section? Your officer, Di Shigang, fed Ms. Wang Liqiu eight bottles of dark mustard oil causing her to lose consciousness. Then he doused her with cold water to revive her and force-fed her again. Shouldn't such an officer be punished?"

Some of the people who heard this were very surprised, some were aloof, and others just hurried away. Then a person arrived who claimed to be a reporter from a human rights magazine sponsored by the State Department. He asked the family why they were there. They told him how the police had force-fed Ms. Wang with dark mustard oil. The reporter said, "We have a restriction that prevents us from discussing the Falun Gong matter."

One family member replied, "Isn't your magazine about human rights? Aren't Falun Gong practitioners human beings? Go back and give this report to your supervisors. If you do that, we will thank you, but if you do not, it does not matter. As you can see, Falun Gong practitioners do not have human rights. No one here will receive us. Where are our human rights?"

After 10:00 a.m., when the family eturned to the city government's Appeals Section to find Chief Xing, he claimed, "We cannot handle this matter. You may go to the District Attorney's Office to file a complaint against Di Shigang."

The family said, "On April 10, officials from the provincial government were accepting appointments from citizens, but you would not do a thing to arrange an appointment for us, no matter what we did. This is your responsibility. At that time you said no one would receive Falun Gong practitioners. If our family is experiencing difficulties, can you say that you are not accountable?"

    Xing was unable to respond.

Ms. Wei Hua Wrongfully Sent to a Mental Hospital in Chongqing

Ms. Wei Hua, 57, lives in Apartment 2, Building 45, Culture Village 2, Xiejiawan, Chongqing. She retired after working at a grocery store in Xiejiawan. She started practicing Falun Gong in 1996 and benefited greatly in both body and mind. After the persecution started in 1999, she persisted in cultivating Falun Gong and was sentenced to a forced labor camp for two years. Between 2001 and 2003 she was illegally detained and tortured at the Chongqing Women's Forced Labor Camp in Maojiashan. On October 18, 2005, Ms. Wei was healthy both in body and mind. Claiming that Ms. Wei was suffering from a "cultural mental disease," the Xiejiawan Street Resident's Committee Secretary Yu Fulin and Yang Zhixue from the brainwashing center forced her husband, Liao Linfu, to sign and agree to send her to a mental hospital. Those who played a role in this persecution were Yu Fulin, Director Yang, Director of a Residence Management Committee Du Chaojun, workers in Xiejiawan Grocery Store, and two health workers. When she was sent to Shipingqiao Branch--the former Mine Machine Factory Employee Hospital of the Jiulongpo District Mental Hospital--Yu Fulin told the doctor, "She is a Falun Gong practitioner and has been in forced labor camps for one and a half years."

Afterwards Liao Linfu went to see his wife many times and saw that she was very normal. He asked for her release many times, but his requests were denied. On November 22, Mr. Liao went to the hospital again and saw that she was healthy and in a normal state of mind. He then left and went back to work in his business.

Only three days later, on November 25, the hospital suddenly sent a "dying notice," urging her family to come and take her home. Wei Hua's fourth youngest sister went to the hospital during the night and saw a sad scene. Wei Hua was paralyzed and on the verge of death. She wasn't recognizable, couldn't speak, and was mentally traumatized. She was vomiting, and had diarrhea and a high fever. There was an oxygen tube in place and she was catheterized. The 120 ward of Chongqing Hospital would not accept her. They had to bring her home.

The following year, Wei Hua's family went to the organizations that were directly responsible for persecuting her, to appeal, including the Shipingqiao Branch of the Jiulongpo District Mental Hospital, the Xiejiawan Police Station, and the Xiejiawan Trade Company. But they all claimed that her condition was caused by her "disease" and denied it was due to any form of persecution. For example, when the doctors in the Shipingqiao Branch of the Jiulongpo District Mental Hospital sent her back to her family, she was paralyzed and could not speak, but on the following day, when her family went back to question them, the doctors denied that Ms. Wei had been paralyzed and unable to speak. When her family found the responsible person with the street residents' committee to discuss the fees they should pay to treat Ms. Wei, the person replied that they did not have any responsibility or obligation to pay and told them to go to Wei Hua's work unit. When her family went to her former work unit--the Xiejiawan Trade Company--they found it was already bankrupt. People in her work unit said they were bankrupt and did not have any money to pay for her care, and that Wei Hua's situation was caused by her own illness. Her family had to resort to legal means to hold people responsible. They went to the Jiulongpo District Court and the Procuratorate to explain the situation, but the two departments both said that the family did not have enough evidence and could not hold the relevant people responsible.

Not long ago, in Jialing Plant, Chongqing City, a healthy man was sent to a mental hospital on the strength of a story his wife made up and subjected to treatment to be "cured." After this event was exposed, citizens in Chongqing and those in the legal field denounced his wife severely and held her responsible. But when this kind of thing happens to Falun Gong practitioners and causes serious results, no one is held responsible. They even claimed that Wei Hua was actually unwell. The persecution of Falun Gong is very severe.

Middle School Teacher Mr. Zhu Huajun from Henan Province Arrested and Persecuted

Mr. Zhu Huajun is a teacher at the First Middle School of Zhenshui Township in Zhengyang County, Henan Province. The police from Zhumadian, Xincai County, and Zhengyang County arrested him. Mr. Zhu is currently being detained and severely abused at Xincai County Detention Center.

Falun Gong practitioner Zhu Huajun went home at around 9:00 p.m. on April 6, 2007. Soon afterwards school Vice-Principal Guo Chunwang and attendant Yu Guanghua went to his home. When Mr. Zhu asked them why they were there, the vice-principal replied, "To see if you're home." Then they left.

Within 30 minutes seven policemen from Xincai County and Zhengyang County knocked on Zhu's door. Without showing a warrant or identification they took him into custody without giving a reason. He was wearing only a light sweater and pants at the time. By the time his mother came out, Mr. Zhu was already being shoved into a police vehicle.

His mother asked, "Why are you taking my son? He didn't do anything wrong."

The police replied, "We'll take you, too, if you keep talking."

After the police took Mr. Zhu to the station they went back to his home and knocked on the door again. When his mother asked who they were, they pretended to be schoolteachers. She told them she wouldn't open the door because her son had just been illegally taken away. The police asked her to open the door so they could explain the situation. She mother asked, "Why didn't you say anything the last time we opened the door? Why do you arrest people and then come back to lie? You said you were a teacher. What's your name?"

When the schoolteachers came out they didn't recognize any of them. The police could do nothing else but leave the school campus.

Around midnight, after everyone had settled down, the police came back to the home again. They jumped over a wall and broke in. Seven police officers illegally searched the home, found nothing, but stole a picture of the founder of Falun Gong. By then, it was already 2:00 a.m.

At around 10:00 a.m. on April 7 the police took Mr. Zhu Huajun to Xincai County Detention Center and attempted to extort a confession by torturing him.

On April 16 Mr. Zhu's father went to visit him, but the police refused him.

On April 23 the police notified his family that they could visit him. When his parents went to the detention center the police refused to let his mother see him because she also practices Falun Gong. The police would only allow his father to see him, because he wasn't a practitioner. When he saw his son, two people were holding him up. His hands were cuffed behind his back and there were tubes inserted into his chest. He couldn't walk on his own. The police were constantly yelling at him.

Mr. Zhu hasn't eaten anything for 12 days now, and his life is in danger. The police still refuse to let his mother visit him. They also forced his father to sign an arrest warrant that was then sent to Tian Guangming from the Procuratorate office.

Since 2007 police officers from the National Security Unit of Zhumandian, Xincai, and Zhengyang Counties have been frantically persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. Practitioners who have been persecuted in Xincai County include Li Quanxi, Zhang Jianqun, and Zhang Suqing. They're all detained at Xincai County Detention Center. Ten practitioners from Zhengyang County were illegally detained and their homes searched. Seven of them have returned home. The three still in detention are Zou Shengbin, Lu Mingquan, and Dong Shuli.
