Zou Gang's murder case occurred on the morning of December 23, 1999. Even before the investigation of the case was completed, on December 29, less than a week later, CCTV broadcast a slanderous report framing Falun Gong in its Evening News and Focus (see CCTV Online News Edition December 30, 1999). This report was not in conformity with the facts. In fact, Zou Gang absolutely never practiced Falun Gong. The murder case was totally due to his psychosis.

Zou Gang, 39 then, was an employee of the Seeds Station of the Songhuajiang General Forestry Bureau. When he was little, he had already acquired strange psychotic behaviours of delusional hearing, visions, sensory experiences, etc., and he was often mumbling nonsense. Because his relatives did not send him to doctors during the time when he was still controllable, his psychosis worsened in recent years. About two months before the murder, Zou had been on sick leave because of high blood pressure but in fact it was his psychosis that made him unable to work. He was restive everyday and was terrified of nonexistent sounds and images, and of being persecuted. For example he was convinced that his friend was poisoning his wine, that a shadow person was harming him, and that there was an eavesdropping device in his house, which he tried to find by dissembling and ruining the electric and heating systems under his bed. He was in constant terror such that he would not even dare to take phone calls from his boss and co-workers. When people visited him, he dared not to open the door. He also had delusions about his wife committing adultery and his daughter being fathered by someone else. This led him to divorce his wife in January of 1999 and refuse to raise his daughter. Later, his condition got worse and worse. Just two days before the murder, he was unable to sleep at night. He felt restless and was in a mental stupor. He had developed a serious mental disorder to the point where he told his father that he had an vision of becoming an emperor, after which he would kill all his family members and so on. He would call his sisters up and talk nonsense, frightening them. Under such circumstances just one day before the murder, his relative called the Taiping Mental Hospital in Harbin to get him some treatment. The professor from the mental hospital was very busy when he took the phone call, so the professor made an appointment to call back. But when the professor called back the next morning around 10am, the murder had already occurred, causing this unremediable loss. From his behaviour when he was committing the crime, it is clear that he was totally out of control, he had no self-awareness, and he was in a state of insanity. When he was confronted at the murder scene, he did not feel scared or cautious, and did not hide nor try to escape. He demonstrated the qualities of a person suddenly awakening from a stupor. This was definitely not the behaviour of a normal person. He said himself that he was controlled by the delusional voices that he heard.

Zou Gang never practiced Falun Gong before. After the murder was committed, when searching his house, his family members and people from his company did not find any Falun Gong books. On the contrary, he had many books of the Buddhist Pure Land cultivation way, which is not in conformity with Falun Gong's teachings. His relatives, neighbours, friends, and co-workers never noticed that he ever practiced Falun Gong before. No one could testify and no one ever asked him to do so. And he did not even know how to do the Falun Gong exercises. He did not know anything about Falun Gong teachings at all. Zou Gang stated himself that he committed the crime because someone told him that someone named Lu or Zou was his anti-person, and that if he didn't kill this anti-person, the anti-person would kill him, and so on. This further shows that Zou had a serious and typical type of schizophrenia, and the murder was committed due to the delusional voices that controlled him. It had nothing to do with Falun Gong.
