Altering the age records of practitioners is among the many despicable things the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has done since it began persecuting Falun Gong 14 years ago. The ages are altered to justify persecution of the elderly and the young.

Many elderly Falun Gong practitioners were persecuted more severely after their ages were altered.

One example is Ms. Hu Yanshun, 81. She is still incarcerated in Ward Two of Longquan Women’s Prison in Chengdu City. She was sentenced to a nine-year term in April 2008, for remaining steadfast in her belief in Falun Gong.

In order to justify the heavy sentence, Daying County judicial office staff altered her age from 76 to 70 before the trial. Ms. Hu wrote to the court regarding the alteration, but never received a reply. After years of persecution, she is now unable to take care of herself and suffers from severe memory loss.

Age Alteration Results in a Heavier Sentence

Ms. Hu was born in 1932 in Daying County, Suining City, Sichuan Province. She previously suffered from many illnesses, all of which disappeared after she began practicing Falun Gong. She followed the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance in her daily life and strove to become a better person. She always helped people in need, and was very popular and respected by her neighbors. This good person has been subjected to years of persecution by the Chinese Communist regime.

Police broke into her home in 2008, and took her to the Daying County Detention Center. Her home was ransacked and her belongings confiscated. The arrest was planned and carried out after Ms. Hu was monitored and followed for six months by Zheng Dashuang and Li Bo from the Suining City Domestic Security Division.

Ms. Hu was 76 years old at that time. To justify a longer sentence, Daying County judicial office changed her birth date from 1932 to 1938 (altering her age from 76 to 70) before the trial. She was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment on April 23, 2008.

Ms. Hu wrote to the court regarding the alteration, but the court did not reply.

Despite her age, the guards coerced her into doing forced labor and work the evening shift when she was held in the detention center. They abused her when she didn’t work quickly. She was forbidden from talking to the other practitioners detained there.

Ms. Hu is still in Ward Two of the Longquan Women’s Prison and subjected to inhuman torture. She is unable to take care of herself and suffers from severe memory loss.

Repeatedly Harassed, Arrested, and Fined

Ms. Hu began practicing Falun Gong in June 1998. After the Chinese Communist regime began persecuting practitioners in July 1999, she told people the facts about Falun Gong and how she had physically and mentally benefited from practicing.

On October 27, 2001, Ms. Hu was arrested by six police officers when she was telling people the facts about Falun Gong. She was pulled into a police vehicle and taken to a detention center. The police ransacked her home and took her Falun Gong books. At the detention center, Domestic Security Division head Yao Jianchun abused her and yelled, “How dare you, an old woman, be against the Chinese Communist Party! I can beat you to death.” She was detained for 12 days and released after having 1,500 yuan extorted from her.

Eight officers broke into her home at 9:00 p.m. on November 6, 2003, and took Ms. Hu and her two guests to the Daying County Detention Center. The police ransacked her home and took two copies of the book Zhuan Falun, and other Falun Gong materials. They even confiscated her grandson’s English learning tapes. The police interrogated the two guests, but didn’t get any information. One guest was released at around 11:00 p.m., and the other was released the next day. A female officer with the Domestic Security Division abused and threatened Ms. Hu, saying, “You damned old woman! If you don't tell us where you got the Falun Gong materials, I'll detain you until you die.” Ms. Hu was not released until her family paid them off 23 days later.

Ms. Hu was arrested with practitioner Ms. Peng Xianglian on April 13, 2005, when they were informing people about the persecution of Falun Gong in Pengxi County. Ms. Peng was sentenced to one year of forced labor. Ms. Hu was sent to the Pengxi County Detention Center. A guard asked her where she got her copies of the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party, but Ms. Hu refused to tell. The guard slapped her face and abused her. She was detained for 15 days and then sentenced to one year of imprisonment with a bail charge of 2,000 yuan.

In October 2005, the authorities planned to send Ms. Hu to the Suining City Brainwashing Center and ordered her son tell them her whereabouts. In order to avoid further persecution, Ms. Hu had to leave home. The police subsequently harassed her son four times and ordered him to report his mother’s whereabouts.

Ms. Hu and four other practitioners went to a village to clarify the truth on February 22, 2006. Domestic Security Division agents illegally arrested them and took them to the Daying County Detention Center. She was detained for 25 days.

The police interfered with her and her family whenever sensitive dates neared, to stop her from going out to publicly appeal.
