Chongqing Woman Detained for Two Years for Filing Complaint Against Prison, Current Status Unknown

Sept. 14, 2020 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Chongqing, China

(Minghui.org) A 71-year-old Chongqing resident has been detained for nearly two years for filing a complaint against Chongqing Women's Prison for subjecting her to various forms of abuse while she was incarcerated there between 2015 and 2018 for her faith in Falun Gong.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is an ancient spiritual and meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Tan Changrong submitted the complaint on September 2, 2018, six months after she was released from serving a three-year term. She detailed the torture she suffered at the prison, including beating, verbal abuse, and electric shock, and asked that the perpetrators be held responsible.

Instead of seeing justice served, she was arrested on October 15, 2018. She was first held at the Hechuan Detention Center and then transferred to the Fusheng Town Detention Center.

The Jiangbei District Procuratorate indicted her in January 2019 and forwarded her case to the Jiangbei District Court. The prosecution evidence included the eleven copies of the complaint letter and nine banknotes with information about Falun Gong printed on them that were confiscated from her home.

Due to strict information censorship in China, many Falun Gong practitioners are using creative ways to raise awareness about the persecution of their faith, including printing messages on banknotes.

Ms. Tan appeared in Jiangbei District Court on November 15, 2019. It’s not clear whether the court has issued a verdict and where Ms. Tan is being detained at the time of writing.

Fearing being implicated in the persecution, her family is afraid to seek justice or compensation for her.

Prior to the three-year prison term she was given in 2015 for talking to people about Falun Gong, Ms. Tan served nine years between 2005 and 2014 at the same Chongqing Women’s Prison for her faith. She was tortured and forced to work without pay for more than ten hours each day.
