(Minghui.org) I am a physician who has chosen to work as a locum tenens. The nature of the job requires me to temporarily substitute for other doctors at various hospitals in the area. This allows me to connect with more people that I am predestined to meet.
During one night shift, I partnered with a local nurse named Jo. Jo is Australian, cheerful, and generous by nature. She had a particular fondness for sweets, always bringing a large bowl of candies, cakes, and pastries to share with me during our shift. She often laughed and joked about her weight, as her sweet tooth had contributed to her being quite overweight.
But one day, things suddenly changed. When I offered her a piece of her favorite cake, she unexpectedly shook her head and refused. She told me that her health had deteriorated, and her doctor had warned her she must control her diet or risk life-threatening consequences.
She rolled up her sleeves to show me the red rash covering her arms, adding that she often suffered from insomnia and struggled to fall asleep at night. In that moment, compassion welled up within me. I shared my own experience practicing Falun Dafa and the miraculous stories of friends and family who had benefited from the practice.
Jo listened in astonishment and said, “That sounds exactly like a story a friend of mine told me. She’s also a Chinese pediatrician.” I smiled and reminded her, “Actually, I shared the facts about Falun Dafa with you back in 2018 during a night shift. I talked about it all night long until my throat was dry, but unfortunately, you weren’t moved at the time.” I pulled out my old work ID, and only then did she remember our prior meeting.
I said, “Chinese people believe in fate. Our repeated encounters must hold deeper meaning. Would you like to try practicing Falun Dafa?” She nodded earnestly and replied, “I would.” I immediately taught her the first few movements of the first set of exercises. To my surprise, she broke into a sweat as soon as she began, with perspiration streaming down her cheeks. Yet she said she felt very comfortable.
One Tuesday afternoon, Jo arrived at the Falun Dafa practice site with her daughter, Clair, as promised. Clair, who suffered from severe anxiety, looked somewhat tense. Although the weather wasn’t hot that day, Jo worked up a sweat during the exercises, needing to sit down and rest every few minutes. Yet she got back up each time and ultimately persevered through the entire set of movements.
The next day, she texted me saying she’d slept exceptionally well that night—something she hadn’t experienced in years. Her daughter also told her she felt an unprecedented sense of inner peace. Both mother and daughter expressed a desire to continue practicing.
However, I soon received another message from Jo. She said she had accidentally fallen in the early hours of the morning, sustaining severe bruising to her lower back that was extremely painful. She had already made appointments with a doctor and a physical therapist.
I quickly urged her to remember Master’s teaching:
“No matter how much you suffer from the “illness,” I hope that you will continue to come, because it is difficult to obtain the Fa.” (Lecture Two, Zhuan Falun)
But Jo still lacked confidence, and her daughter didn’t want to come alone. I felt a bit disappointed, but quickly adjusted my mindset and sent forth righteous thoughts.
A few minutes later, Jo texted me again, saying several friends of hers also wanted to learn Falun Dafa. I was delighted and replied, “The more the merrier.” That same day, four of Jo’s friends came to the practice site. After practicing, they all said they felt great and even offered to pay tuition. I told them that Falun Dafa practice is completely free. Because the most precious things in the world—air, love, and Dafa—cannot be measured by money. They were deeply moved upon hearing this and said they would come again next week.
Meanwhile, Jo also did the exercises at home with her husband and daughter. She told me that her husband’s back pain had significantly eased, and the entire family felt physically and mentally refreshed. From then on, Jo gradually embarked on the path of cultivation.
Looking back on this experience, I deeply realize that encounters between people are never accidental; they are all guided by fate and arranged by Master. As long as we carry compassion in our hearts and sincerely share the wonder of Dafa, we can ignite the light of hope in others’ lives. Jo, along with her family and friends, are like lamps lit in the night sky, continuing to illuminate the lives of many more people.
