Elderly Practitioners: Don’t Be Attached to Affection for Family

Dec. 31, 2025 |   By a Falun Dafa practitioner in China

(Minghui.org) This morning, while doing the sitting meditation, I reminded myself not to let my thoughts go astray, to avoid unknowingly practicing an evil way. All of a sudden, I was enlightened to a new understanding of “unknowingly.”

An elderly female practitioner recently contacted me. She wanted to listen to Minghui radio and asked me to help her. I got to know this practitioner two years ago —her complexion was rosy, and her steps were light. I met her a few times, but then didn’t see her for over a year. Sometimes I spoke to her on the phone and asked what she was doing. She said she was working, leaving home early in the morning and getting home late at night. I said, “You have a pension, so you don’t need to work.” She said it wasn’t convenient to explain over the phone. Later, I found out what she meant. Her only son, who was married, had several hundred thousand yuan in business debts. This practitioner, who was nearly in her 70s, decided to work to help her son. When I saw her again, she didn’t look well and seemed tired. I suggested she stop working because it was affecting her doing the three things.

I recalled that the elderly local practitioners around me have the same problem. They say they want to keep up with the progress of Fa-rectification, but due to China’s declining economy, their children are not doing well financially. These practitioners want to help, so they take on the responsibility of looking after their grandchildren. How will they have enough energy to do things to validate the Fa?

There’s an old Chinese saying: “Descendants have their own blessings; don’t work like a horse for them. Descendants have their own blessings; don’t worry about their future.” Yet it seems that elderly practitioners have become slaves to their descendants.

We have a mission. If we let our children and grandchildren interfere in fulfilling our vows, not only will it bring us severe consequences, just think how great a sin our descendants will have incurred!

Today, after finishing the sitting meditation, I thought of Master’s teachings:

“Those who are attached to affection for family will definitely be burned, entangled, and tormented by it. Pulled by the threads of affection and plagued by them throughout their lives, they will find it too late to regret at the end of their lives. (“Cultivators’ Avoidances,” Essentials For Further Advancement)

I have seen what happens to elderly practitioners around me who have not done the three things well. As they become less diligent in their thoughts and actions, they go through old age, decline physically, lose their youthful appearance, and, in the end, become like ordinary people. As cultivators, we cannot slack off in the standards required of us. We have to abandon all our attachments. Otherwise, when the Fa rectification reaches the human world in the near future, we will realize what we have lost.

The above is my personal understanding. Please point out anything wrong.
