Letting Go of Attachments to Cultivate Compassion

Oct. 8, 2026 |   By a Falun Dafa practitioner in China

(Minghui.org) In July 2025, it started raining heavily at 5:00 p.m. and continued into the night. Around 10:00 p.m., my husband became concerned that the rising floodwaters might sweep our car away. He asked our son to go with him to move it to the highest point on the road.

When they went out, the water on the road was already waist-deep. My son wore a life jacket and went along with my husband. When they were returning home the rain had intensified, and the water was rising rapidly. As they passed my husband’s brother’s house, my husband told our son, “Let’s check on your uncle.”

They tried to open the door, but it wouldn’t budge. It took all their strength to finally force it open. Inside, they found my husband’s brother and sister-in-law standing on their bed. The water level in the room was deep, and their clothes were completely soaked. My husband and son then pulled them along to the safety of our home.

I hurriedly found dry clothes for them to change into. Seeing them in such a pitiful state, I was struck by how fragile human life truly is. I felt deep compassion for my elder brother-in-law and his wife.

Before this situation, I had resented them, which I’d been trying to let go of. Given the hurt they caused me since I married into the family, I truly wanted nothing to do with them—I didn’t even want to see them. Yet, since practicing Dafa, my capacity for tolerance expanded. As a practitioner, I’m the happiest and most blessed person in the world; what’s there left to argue about with ordinary people?

In the past, I always felt I may have owed them a debt from a past life and once it was repaid, that would be the end of it. I viewed things solely in terms of my own personal loss and gain, failing to treat them as sentient beings in need of salvation. While we would chat casually whenever we met and helped each other out when the need arose, there remained an unbridgeable chasm between us.

In this current situation, I truly treated them with compassion and kindness. Instantly, my heart felt illuminated, as if a skylight had opened up for me. Thirty years of grievances and grudges were dissolved by Dafa, and I felt a wonderful sense of lightness.

Just after midnight, the heavy downpour eased slightly. My husband’s brother said, “Oh no, there’s an elderly man who rents a room on our property. We should check on him—we don’t want him to drown in the floodwaters.” Without a moment’s hesitation, my husband said, “I’ll go check on him right away.”

When my husband went out, the water was still very deep. As he reached the man’s room, he found him clinging to a radiator, with only his head visible above the water. Realizing the danger, my husband immediately hoisted the old man onto his back and headed toward our home. As they reached the slope leading to our house, the rain had intensified, and it was impossible to for him carry the man any further. My husband then set him down and helped him up the rest of the way on foot.

When I looked out, I saw that the man was unclothed, wearing only an adult diaper. Seeing him in such a pitiful state, I quickly found some clothes for him to wear. By then, it was 2 a.m., so I prepared a bed for him.

The next morning, my brother-in-law and his wife went home, leaving the elderly man in my care. I felt that Master Li had arranged for this predestined person to come to me. I clarified the truth about Dafa to him and asked him to remember, “Falun Dafa is good, and Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good.” He also agreed to withdraw from the Communist Party’s Youth League and Young Pioneers. I then helped him walk back home. I had never met this man before, but he came to my home to be saved in this way. Master truly does not leave behind a single person with a predestined connection!

After the rain subsided, we went to the farmland near our storage site, where we currently grow corn, to check for any damage. On the way there, we saw that patches of crops on both sides of the road had been flattened or washed away by the floodwaters. When we arrived at our field, however, we found the crops intact and undamaged.

There was another site located uphill from ours, and they were hit particularly hard by the floodwaters. All sorts of items—large and small barrels, basins, and the like—were carried by the floodwater onto our land. A patch of our corn, measuring only about three or four square meters, had been flattened.

Upon seeing this, my husband immediately pressed his palms together and said, “Thank you, Master!” He then said to me, “It’s a good thing you practice Dafa and have Master’s protection; otherwise, our corn crop would have suffered heavy damage!”

On the way back, my husband said, “As soon as we get home, we must offer incense and bow to Master to thank him!” Once home, I quickly went to the room where we have Master’s portrait and lit the lamp. My husband personally offered incense and bowed nine times, expressing his heartfelt gratitude to Master.

My husband is a very kindhearted man; he understands the principles of Dafa and has always benefited from my practicing it. Whenever he was out and about, if anyone spoke ill of Dafa, he would counter by asking, “What’s wrong with Falun Dafa? It’s a magnificent, high-level Fa that saves people.” He simply would not tolerate anyone badmouthing Dafa.

Looking back at my 20 years of cultivation, I feel a sense of shame. I spent the first 10 years running a business, the next 10 looking after my two granddaughters and, even in the years since, I haven’t cultivated diligently. I’ve been too attached to comfort, afraid of hardship, and constantly preoccupied with the trivialities of daily life. This attachment to comfort has especially hindered my progress. I’ve wasted so much time!

From now on, I will definitely make up for lost time, prioritize doing the three things, and do a better job of saving sentient beings.
