A 78-year-old Shanghai woman died on August 21, 2024, three years after completing a one-year-two-month prison term for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Lin Qiupeng was arrested at home on May 29, 2020, by eight officers from the Changning District Domestic Security Office. They put her in the Changning District Detention Center on criminal detention the next day. Her family received her detention notice a week later.
The Changning District Procuratorate approved her arrest on July 3, and the police submitted her case to the procuratorate on September 4. Her case was forwarded to the Fengxian District Court in November 2020.
Ms. Lin’s brother, Mr. Lin Shenli, who lives in Toronto, Canada, called for her release, but to no avail.

Ms. Lin stood trial at the Fengxian District Court on July 28, 2021, and was sentenced to one year and two months at the end of the hearing. She was released the next day when the prison term ended (May 29, 2020 – July 29, 2021).
The Shanghai Social Security Bureau stopped Ms. Lin’s pension shortly after her release.
Starting on August 1, 2021, the local Hongqiao Town Street Committee Office instructed the security guard at Ms. Lin’s gated apartment complex to log her exit and entry times. They often harassed her at home or on the phone. They even shadowed her from 7 a.m. to midnight every day from October 1 to 15, 2021.
Ms. Lin was shadowed closely and harassed at home again on November 3, 2021, the day before the Fourth China International Import Expo was to be held in Shanghai. When the Sixth China International Import Expo was held in Shanghai again in November 2023, the police put her on around-the-clock surveillance.
The constant surveillance and harassment never let up during Ms. Lin’s final years. She lived under constant stress and died on August 21, 2024.
Ms. Lin took up Falun Gong in 1998, and the blood in her urine and hair loss problems were soon cured. With better health, she worked harder at her job and also took on more household chores.
Prior to her last arrest, Ms. Lin was detained twice for upholding her faith.
In 2001, she went to Beijing, wishing to tell the government how she has benefited from practicing Falun Gong, but was intercepted halfway and returned to Shanghai. She was detained for over a month.
She was arrested again on January 21, 2016, and detained for 15 days.
