(Minghui.org) A 63-year-old woman in Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province, was sentenced to three and a half years becaise she practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Liu Rongpei was arrested on July 20, 2025, during a police sweep by officers from the Lusong District Police Department and its subordinates, the Longquan Police Station, the Jianning Police Station, and the Songjiaqiao Police Station. Numerous officers were dispatched to raid her and other local practitioners’ homes.
Ms. Liu was soon released and put under house arrest. The police submitted her case to the Lusong District Procuratorate and took her back into custody on February 10, 2026, while she was still mourning her mother’s death. Her mother died on February 6, 2026. Her adopted daughter, an elementary school pupil, had to move in with her birth mother.
Ms. Liu’s family learned in early May 2026 that she was sentenced to three and a half years by the Lusong District Court. They were not told other details of her indictment, trial, or sentencing. She is now appealing the wrongful conviction.
This is not the first time that Ms. Liu was targeted for her faith, which she credits for helping her recover from congenital heart disease. She was previously arrested multiple times, and she served a seven-year prison term between 2001 and 2008. Her employer, the Zhuzhou Smelter Group, terminated her while she was in jail. See the related report for details of her past persecution.
