Liaoning Woman Denied Prison Admission Due to Serious Medical Condition, Police Refuse to Release Her

June 16, 2026 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Liaoning Province, China

(Minghui.org) A woman in Donggang City, Liaoning Province, was denied prison admission due to serious medical conditions, yet the police refused to release her.

Ms. Liu Mei, around 59, was arrested on April 10, 2026, for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999. The police took her to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on May 21, intending to have her re-serve an expired two-year term.

The prison authorities ordered her to have a required physical exam at the Liaoning Provincial Prison Administration General Hospital. She was found to have a cystic-solid mixed mass measuring approximately 9.1 x 7.4 cm in her right adnexa. Inside the mass was a hyperechoic mass (with no blood flow) measuring approximately 4.4 x 5.5 cm. The doctors suspected it was a fetiform teratoma (malformed fetus) from decades ago.

The prison decided against admitting Ms. Liu. The police took her back to the Dandong City Detention Center. They drove her to the Dandong City Central Hospital on May 26 for a follow-up visit. The doctors there warned that the teratoma tumor could rupture, twist, cause infection or other acute abdominal conditions, and even become cancerous. They recommended surgery as soon as possible.

Ms. Liu and her family objected to surgery, given its inherent risks and the unsuitable post-operative environment in the detention center. The police then kept her held at the detention center after the hospital visit.

Ms. Liu’s latest detention stemmed from her arrest on November 7, 2021, for practicing Falun Gong. Due to poor health, she was released on December 17, 2021, and put on house arrest. The Zhen’an District Court sentenced her to two years with a 3,000-yuan fine on December 29, 2022. Her appeal was rejected by the Dandong City Intermediate Court on February 20, 2023. She was allowed to serve time outside of prison due to poor health.

Ms. Liu’s term expired in October 2023, yet the police arrested her on April 10, 2026, ordering her to re-serve the two-year term.
