A 65-year-old woman in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, died suddenly on September 9, 2025, two days before the end of her six-year-four-month prison term for practicing Falun Gong.

The Yunnan Province Second Women’s Prison refused to provide any details regarding Ms. Pu Baoyu’s death. It’s also unclear whether the prison returned Ms. Pu’s body to her family.

According to an insider, Ms. Pu was injected with toxic drugs in the prison, a common practice imposed on Falun Gong practitioners who refuse to renounce their faith.

Officers from the Guandu District Domestic Security Office followed Ms. Pu for months before arresting her on May 12, 2019. She was later sentenced to six years and four months, and admitted to the Yunnan Province Second Women’s Prison. Her family was kept in the dark about her prosecution and prison admission.

On the morning of September 9, 2025, Ms. Pu’s cellmates woke up to find that she had stopped breathing. The exact time of her death is unknown.

Past Persecution

Since the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Pu was repeatedly targeted for upholding her faith. Prior to her last prison term, she received two other three-year sentences. Unable to cope with the pressure of the persecution, her husband divorced her. Ms. Pu was granted custody of their daughter.

First Prison Sentence

Ms. Pu was arrested on August 2, 2005, while distributing Falun Gong informational materials at a farmers’ market. Officers from the Guandu District Domestic Security Office ransacked her home and took her to the Guandu District Detention Center.

The Kunming City Procuratorate issued a formal arrest warrant for Ms. Pu on August 31, 2005. She was sentenced to three years by the Kunming City Intermediate Court on August 13, 2007.

As soon as Ms. Pu was admitted to the Yunnan Province Second Women’s Prison, she was put in solitary confinement for 42 days. She was denied personal hygiene, including bathing, changing clothes, and combing her hair. She was forced to sit motionless on a small stool all day long with only four bathroom breaks, which caused open sores on her buttocks.

Ms. Pu’s term was reduced by six months and she was released on February 1, 2008.

Second Prison Sentence

Ms. Pu was arrested again during a police sweep prior to the 20th anniversary of the public introduction of Falun Gong on May 13, 2012. At 12 a.m. on May 5, seven officers from the Guandu District Domestic Security Office broke into her brother’s home, where she was staying. They spent three hours ransacking the place.

Ms. Pu was later sentenced to three years by the Kunming City Intermediate Court.
