Fujian Woman Stands Trial for Practicing Falun Gong, Husband Barred from Attending Hearing

Aug. 18, 2026

(Minghui.org) A woman in Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, stood trial on July 31, 2026, for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.

Ms. Huang Meiying, in her late 40s, was arrested on December 8, 2025, at the restaurant where she worked. The arresting officers from the Jin’an District Domestic Security Office and the Yuefeng Police Station raided her home and confiscated her Falun Gong books. They put her in the Fuzhou City Second Detention Center the next day.

Ms. Huang’s husband picked up her confiscated cell phone from the police station. He next went to the domestic security office to inquire about her case status. An officer flashed a detention notice but didn’t allow him to read it carefully or give him a copy. He was also not given any contact information for follow-up.

The police later asked Ms. Huang’s husband to identify a woman shown in surveillance footage riding a bicycle passing by a certain location. He said that was his wife and was thus listed as prosecution evidence.

The police submitted the case to the Jin’an District Procuratorate seeking prosecution of her because she was “reported for distributing Falun Gong informational materials at the above-mentioned location.”

Ms. Huang was soon issued a formal arrest warrant and had her case transferred to the Minqing County Procuratorate. Prosecutor Xiao Yao indicted her at an unknown time.

Ms. Huang stood trial at the Minqing County Court on July 31, 2026. Only her son, brother, and nephew were allowed to attend the hearing. Her husband was barred from attending since he was a “prosecution witness.” No other spectators were allowed because this was deemed a “non-public trial.”

Prosecutor Xiao accused Ms. Huang of violating Article 300 of the Criminal Law, which stipulates that those using a cult organization to undermine law enforcement must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The defense lawyer argued that no law in China criminalizes Falun Gong or labels it as a cult. His client’s possession of Falun Gong books and informational materials was totally lawful and caused no damage to anyone or society at large, much less undermine law enforcement.

The lawyer added that the surveillance footage only showed Ms. Huang riding a bike near the concerned location, not her distributing materials. He also pointed out that the police treated each Falun Gong book confiscated from his client’s home as multiple pieces of evidence instead of one.

Prosecutor Xiao claimed that Ms. Huang was a repeat offender as she was previously arrested on September 26, 2024, and detained for ten days for practicing Falun Gong.

Ms. Huang testified in her own defense. She argued that she should never have been prosecuted for exercising her constitutional right to freedom of belief. Besides the 2024 arrest and her latest arrest, she was also given one and a half years of forced labor following an earlier arrest after 1 a.m. on April 8, 2010. Her child was still an elementary pupil at the time.

The guards at the Fujian Province Women’s Labor Camp abused Ms. Huang when she refused to renounce Falun Gong. They gave her no bedding and often didn’t allow her to sleep. She was not given any sanitary pads during her period. Four inmates were instructed to take turns watching her around the clock. They barred her from using the restroom when she refused to recite the labor camp rules.

Guards Huang Lei and He Qin shocked Ms. Huang with electric batons when she urged them to stop persecuting her. She went on a hunger strike in protest and was force-fed, which caused her to bleed profusely from her mouth and nose. The guards closed all the windows to prevent others from hearing her screams.

The judge adjourned the hearing without issuing a verdict.
