Everyone should be content in his way, and thereby do well in his role."
King Jinggong said, "Well said. If kings don't act like kings, court officials don't act like court officials, fathers don't act like fathers, and sons don't act like sons, then no matter how much grain there is in the country, is there anything for me to eat?"
Ji Kangzi, an official from the Lu Kingdom, inquired about how to govern from Confucius. Confucius said, "Governing, it first has to be upright. You have to take an upright path. If you take an upright path and become the people's role model, who would dare not to choose an upright path?"
Ji Kangzi asked, "What if I kill all the ones who don't choose an upright path so as to make people be upright?"
Confucius said, "If you can be kind, then the people will naturally follow and be kind. The morals of the people in high positions are like the wind, and the common people are like grass. The wind blows on the grass, and the grass turns whichever way the wind does."
