SEOUL, South Korea--Renowned South Korean environmental activist, Byung-Soo Choi, says he came to hear the Buddha's teachings when he saw Divine Performing Arts (DPA) at Seoul's Universal Arts Center, Feb. 7.
Mr. Byung said he had heard a lot about Divine Performing Arts but it was the first time that he had been able to see the performance for himself.
"I felt so happy as I absorbed a lot of teachings from the show. I have been thinking seriously throughout the entire performance, 'Have we once descended from the Heavens?' At last I saw the Buddha sitting in the middle of the circles, and that moment I felt as if the Buddha was talking to us!"
Mr. Byung was referring to the closing scene in the DPA program called, Knowing the True Picture Offers Ultimate Hope that shows higher lives entering the world in human form to restore moral integrity.
"This is beautiful. I have come here to listen carefully to the Buddha's teachings," he said.
Mr. Byung said he was impressed with the many facets of the show.
"Every program is very deep. The overall design of the performers was very good and very bright. The lyrics of the songs are wonderful. The costumes are beautiful and full of vitality.
"This is the first time I saw this kind of backdrop. It is novel!"
He noticed the different styles of dancing for men and women, "The men's dancing was bold and powerful. The women's dances were expressive and graceful," he said.
He also appreciated the educational aspects of the show, noting the story Monk Ji Gong Abducts the Bride.
"The program where there was a monk who foretold the future, and thus saved the village. That was very educational."
Mr. Byong, who is also an artist, said the show had influenced him to include more beauty in his work.
"The themes of my works are based on social issues and environmental issues, and the majority of my works are to expose the dark side of the society. So my previous works did not have many beautiful scenes. After watching this show, I am thinking to draw more beautiful works."
