On September 2, the first day of the APEC Summit, the Chinese Liberal Culture Movement held a press conference to kick off the "Falun Gong Persecution Awareness Week" in downtown Sydney. The press conference attracted many mainstream media outlets. Australia Broadcasting Corporation and The Australian interviewed Wang Xiaodan and Chen Muhan. Ms. Wang is living in the United States. Her father, Wang Zhiwen, was sentenced to 16 years in prison by the Chinese Communist regime because of his belief in Falun Gong. Ms. Chen is a Sydney resident whose mother, Zeng Aihua, is being illegally detained in the Shanghai Women's Prison.

"The Courage of Wang Zhiwen" Seminar

After the press conference, "The Courage of Wang Zhiwen" seminar was held, attracting an audience of nearly 200 people. Sound of Hope International Radio broadcast the seminar live.

Wang Xiaodan introduced the situation of her father, Wang Zhiwen. She said: "Daddy is a widely recognized good person. When I heard that daddy was sentenced to a long prison term, for a short period, I lost my eyesight. In the past 8 years, I have never seen daddy and only received a few letters from him. It took me several years to overcome the sorrow and start to tell the public about my daddy's story."

Fei Liangyong, a member of the Coordinating Committee of the Chinese Liberal Culture Movement and chairman of the Federation for a Democratic China, gave a speech entitled, "Spiritual Belief and Chinese Morality Renaissance." He said that the abuse of power by the Chinese Communist Party is the main cause for the degeneration of morality in China. Its philosophy of atheism is the fundamental cause of this degeneration. In contrast, "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance" offers the fundamental momentum for uplifting morality; the rebuilding of morality requires spiritual beliefs.

Other members of the Coordinating Committee of the Chinese Liberal Culture Movement, including Zhong Weiguang, Yuan Tieming, Feng Haiguang and Jia Kuo also gave speeches at the seminar.

Chinese Liberal Culture Movement Delivers an Open Letter to APEC Leaders

On September 5, as part of the "In the Name of Humanity, Falun Gong Persecution Awareness Week," the Chinese Liberal Culture Movement delivered an open letter to APEC leaders through personal visits, mail and fax. The open letter urged APEC leaders to take effective measures to press the Chinese Communist regime to end the genocide of Falun Gong.

On the morning of September 5, professor Yuan Hongbin, Fei Liangyong and Wang Gongbiao delivered the letter to the US, Canadian and New Zealand consulates in Sydney. Officials in these consulates all promised to pass on this letter to their government leaders.

Yuan Hongbin said: "We want to emphasize one thing: The key of this issue is not whether you agree with Falun Gong's beliefs, because Falun Gong never forces anyone to accept its belief. The key is that humans in the 21st century cannot tolerate the Chinese Communist regime's using state terrorism to persecute a cultivation group whose belief is 'Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance'."

Fei Liangrong told the media: "Since the persecution of Falun Gong started in July 1999, more than 3000 Falun Gong practitioners have died and there are still many practitioners in prisons being subjected to all kinds of torture. They have no human rights. We have talked about this issue with many leaders of different countries. However, the persecution is still going on in China. This open letter is to help APEC leaders pay close attention to the plight of Falun Gong practitioners, to expose the crimes of the Chinese Communist regime to daylight, and to unite all forces to end the persecution."

Professor Yuan Hongbin stated: "Today, our purpose is to urge all governments which respect human rights to send a strong message to the Chinese Communist regime: The persecution of Falun Gong is a disgrace to humanity. To save human honor, we must take effective measures to stop the persecution of Falun Gong."

Reportedly, the Chinese Liberal Culture Movements has more than 1200 members, with the majority in China. The "In the Name of Humanity, Falun Gong Persecution Awareness Week" also received support from its members in China. Professor Yuan said that this is the first time that Chinese intellectuals have expressed their concerns about the persecution of Falun Gong in the form of a social movement."
