(Minghui.org) Mr. Liu Yongsheng, 46, a reliability engineer at the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, Chengdu Aircraft Design and Research Institute, was secretly sentenced to three years in prison in May 2013. The Xinjin County Court of Sichuan Province issued the sentence. The court did not inform his family or issue any written judgment.

Details of the Case

Mr. Liu was reported to the police on the evening of July 12, 2012, for posting two flyers near a gate of the Xinjin Brainwashing Center. The flyers exposed two death cases of Falun Gong practitioners at the center. Officers from the Huaqiao Police Station arrested him.

Mr. Liu has been illegally detained at the Xinjin Detention Center. His family has not been allowed to visit him.

The family never received a formal notification of Mr. Liu's arrest. When they inquired about his case at the police department on May 13, 2013, the officer on duty said the notification had been mailed.

The family hired a lawyer to defend Mr. Liu. A staff member of the Xinjin County Court told them: “Liu Yongsheng has been sentenced to three years in prison. The verdict was delivered to the detention center on May 14, and he can appeal in 10 days.”

The family then went to the Xinjin Detention Center to visit Mr. Liu, but they were not allowed to see him. A guard told them, “If he does not appeal, he will be granted family visits.”

The family went to Chengdu Middle Court to appeal on May 17 and 24, 2013. They were given the office number of judge Li Song. The family called the number many times, but the calls were never answered. They also looked for Li in court during the office hours, but to no avail.

The family asked their lawyer to handle the appeal. However, the lawyer also could not make an appointment with Li when he went to the court on June 24, 2013. He was only allowed to submit case-related documents to Li's staff member.

Neither the lawyer nor the family have received a reply.

The lawyer visited Mr. Liu in the detention center and learned that Mr. Liu had submitted an appeal on May 19, 2013.
