Family Visits Denied Until Sentenced

As Ms. Sun's family hadn't heard from her for over ten days, they went to visit her at the Jimo Detention Center at around 9:00 a.m. on July 24.

The family was told, “You can’t see her until she has been sentenced. But, you can leave some cash for her.” The guard refused to take clothes and said, “She can’t accept food or clothes from her family. If you leave some cash for her, she can buy anything here.” Her family had to leave money. They asked, “Why didn’t you notify her family about her arrest? We even filed a missing person report with the police.” The guard replied, “The family must be notified. You should ask the police station that arrested her. This does not concern us.”

Ms. Sun’s family went to the Changjiang Road Police Station at 9 a.m. on July 25. They asked for her purse and were told that only Ms. Sun could make such a request. When asked how long she would be detained and why her family was not notified, the police replied, “We sent the notice by snail mail. It takes some time to reach you.” Her family said, “It has been ten days. We live in the same city. Why haven’t we received anything in the mail?” The police answered, “Sometimes it takes one month.”

Her family told the police, “She needs to take care of her parents who are in their seventies. She respects them a lot. You should consider her situation. How can you arrest kind and innocent people?” After making a phone call, police told them that “She would be released in one month.” Her family responded, “We will take her home.” The police refused, “No. She will be transferred to this station and then we will determine what to do next. You can go home and wait for the notification.”
