(Minghui.org) Ms. Wang Chuanju, a 59-year-old elementary school teacher from Junan County, was illegally arrested on June 16, 2014 for putting up truth-clarification materials about Falun Gong at Lingquan Township. Her home was also ransacked by officers of the Domestic Security Division.
After Ms. Wang's arrest, her daughters hired an attorney from Beijing to fight for her rights and release. Two times he tried to meet with Ms. Wang without success, and the case is now in the public prosecution department's hands.
On September 23, 2014, after being illegally imprisoned more than three months, Ms. Wang was allowed to meet with the attorney at the Linyi City Detention Center.
Daughters and Attorney Given the Run-Around
Ms. Wang's daughters hired the Beijing attorney on July 7, 2014. As he attempted to visit his client at the detention center, Domestic Security Division officers Chen Xin and Guo Qiang stopped him. The officers claimed that the Judicial Bureau disallowed the visit.
When the attorney told them, Ms. Wang's daughters went to the procuratorate on July 10 to ask why the lawyer was not allowed to meet with their mother. The procuratorate informed them that the Judicial Bureau does not allow Falun Gong practitioners to be represented by legal counsel.
The next day, the sisters went to the police department to file a complaint against Domestic Security officers for abuse of authority.
On July 15, they went to the Domestic Security Division on behalf of their father since he was not able to go. Guo informed them of the approved arrest notice by the procuratorate and told them to sign it. The sisters said they needed to consult their lawyer before signing anything, but Guo pressed them to do it quickly. However, he said it wouldn't matter if they signed the arrest notice or not, since the arrest had already been approved.
They asked when the lawyer could meet with their mother.
Guo responded, “Don't even think of the attorney visiting. It's no use hiring a lawyer. Even when the case is transferred to the procuratorate or the court, you won't be allowed to visit until she has been sentenced. If you appeal the verdict, your visitation rights will be revoked!”
On July 16 the sisters went to Domestic Security Division to submit a request for bail. There they met Officer Chen. He told them that he now held the complaint they submitted against his department. He claimed he could detain them based on that document alone.
Undeterred by the threat, they again asked why the lawyer was not allowed to visit their mother. Chen said that the local 610 Office had ordered this. The sisters hurried to the 610 Office for confirmation, but the staff said they had no idea what this was about. They said they had no authority whatsoever to prevent an attorney from meeting with his client.
The sisters returned to Chen's office to confront him about lying to them. He snapped back that they should check directly with the head of the 610 Office, so they rushed back. When they got there, they were told the 610 head was on a business trip. Hearing this, the elder sister burst into tears.
On the morning of July 17, the sisters passed Chen and Guo on the stairs up to the 610 office. They greeted the officers politely, but the officers pretended not to know them.
Staffers at the 610 Office showed the sisters a classified document which says nothing about not allowing lawyers to meet their clients, except that out-of-town lawyers must file a report with the Judicial Bureau.
The lawyer made his second visit to the detention center on August 6. Again, he was turned away. Guo told him the case was classified and was given instructions on the matter by a higher authority.
On September 23, the lawyer finally met his client on his third try.
Domestic Security Officers Raid Ms. Wang's Home
Chen, Guo, and a team of Domestic Security Division officers raided Ms. Wang's home on June 16. Ms. Wang's husband, Mr. Du, was home alone at the time. The police did not produce any identification as they searched the whole house, creating a big mess.
Ms. Wang's sister heard what was going on and rushed over. She demanded to know why they were carting off items from the house.
Guo shouted at her. “Get lost! You are obstructing us!”
She said this is her sister's house. Mr. Du, an honest and kind man, was scared. He tried to persuade them not to create a scene.
Personal items—Dafa books, computers, and cell phones worth thousands of yuan in aggregate—were taken from the home. Mr. Du, in shock, fell into depression and became ill.
The case is now at the public prosecution department. The section chief-in-charge is Wang Houyan.
After Ms. Wang began to practice Falun Gong, her two daughters watched their mother change from an ill and bad-tempered woman to a healthy person who put others before herself.
Ms. Wang is reported to still be in good health, but her daughters are worried for her safety and are determined to secure their mother's release.
