(Minghui.org) Mr. Meng Fanquan has been arrested and detained many times since the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999. He was last arrested on March 13, 2014. Officials from the Lubei Procuratorate in Tangshan approved the arrest on April 18, 2014.
Mr. Meng was released from prison on April 18, 2013, after serving a 7-year sentence. He was arrested again on May 23, 2013, and was detained in the Tangshan Detention Center for ten days.
Mr. Meng Fanquan
Mr. Meng from Tangshan City in Hebei Province used to be a lecturer at the Light Industry College of the Hebei University of Science and Technology. His superiors aided the Chinese Communist Party in persecuting him. They did not allow him to teach and forced him to do manual labor. They withheld his wages and even paid them direct to his persecutors. He was fired from his workplace in December 2006.
Imprisoned for Seven Years
Officers from the Lubei Police Department arrested Mr. Meng at work on April 18, 2006. They then went to his home, tricked his son into opening the door and ransacked the place. They confiscated computers, an MP3 player and other personal belongings. They also took the child's cellphone. The police tortured Mr. Meng while interrogating him. They tied him to an iron chair and covered his head with a plastic bag, almost suffocating him.
A trial was held for Mr. Meng at the Lubei Court on September 12, 2006. He was sentenced to seven years in prison and taken to the Jidong Prison at the end of October.
Upon arrival at the prison, Mr. Meng was locked in a small cell and tortured. He was shocked with electric batons, beaten, force-fed, made to stand for long periods of time and deprived of sleep. He became mentally disoriented, and under duress wrote five guarantee statements to renounce his belief in Falun Gong.
By the time Mr. Meng was released in April 2013, his hair had turned gray, his teeth were loose and he was very weak.
Persecution History
In July 2002, Mr. Meng's superiors at the university where he worked cooperated with the Hebei police and arrested him. He was held in a brainwashing center for 18 months, and his wages were paid directly to the officials there. While Mr. Meng was held in the brainwashing center, his wife was also imprisoned in a labor camp, leaving their nine-year-old son alone at home.
Mr. Meng was sentenced to one year of forced labor in January 2001 and was taken to the Tangshan Hehuakeng Forced Labor Camp. He was informed of his sentence while he was being held in the Tangshan No. 1 Detention Center. Mr. Meng was arrested and taken to the detention center in October 2000, where he was forced to wear heavy shackles for three consecutive weeks.
In September 1999, Mr. Meng went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. He was detained for 15 days and then taken to the Tangshan No. 1 Detention Center for three months. The guards ordered a dozen plus inmates to beat him for about eight hours. The police extorted 2,000 yuan from him. During this time his superiors at the university withheld his wages.
