(Minghui.org) Due to Typhoon Nalgae, heavy rain fell in many provinces in Mindanao, southern Philippines on October 28, 2022. It caused severe flooding and large-scale landslides.

According to the Philippine Disaster Center, as of October 30, the typhoon had killed at least 98 people, injured another 69, and left 63 missing. Most casualties were recorded in landslide-hit Maguindanao Province.

Typhoon Nalgae made landfall on the eastern Philippines island of Catanduanes early on October 29 with a maximum wind speed of 95 kilometers per hour (59 mph) and an instantaneous maximum gust of 160 kilometers per hour (99 mph).

Even before making landfall, it brought pouring rain which caused flooding in many southern provinces on October 28. Buildings and vehicles were submerged in the water. Rescue workers urgently dispatched rubber boats to help trapped people escape.

According to Philippine authorities, 219 areas were hit by floods, 37 landslides occurred, and nearly 160,000 people across the country were forced to leave their homes due to the storm. At least 270,000 people were affected by the storm across the country. More than 116 domestic and international flights to and from the Philippines had been canceled.

Photos and video of the search and rescue effort showed bodies being pulled from the water and thick mud, and residents trapped on rooftops.

Nalgae is the second deadliest tropical storm to hit the Philippines in the past 12 months. Category 5 Typhoon Rai ravaged the central provinces of the Philippines, killing 407 people and injuring more than 1,100 in December 2021.
