A woman in Yongchuan District, Chongqing, died on December 15, 2025, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.

Ms. Deng Huacheng, in her 70s, was first arrested on June 15, 2011, by Xuanhua Police Station officers and staffers from the Shengli Road Street Office and Community Committee. They held her at the Taohuayuan Brainwashing Center for an unknown amount of time.

While taking her granddaughter to school on the morning of April 16, 2012, Ms. Deng was arrested and taken to the same brainwashing center. The police raided her home and confiscated her laptop, printer, cell phone, an MP3 player, and Falun Gong informational materials. Two months later she was transferred to the Chongqing Women’s Labor Camp to serve a two-year term.

On the morning of April 7, 2017, nine people, including officers from the Yongchuan District Domestic Security Office and street office staffers, pried open the door of Ms. Deng’s rental apartment and took her and her roommate, Ms. Cao Xianlu, to the Yongchuan District Detention Center.

Ms. Deng was later convicted for her faith and admitted to the Chongqing Women’s Prison on July 5, 2018. Her family was never notified of her exact prison term. They went to the prison to see her but were turned away. A few days later, the prison called them to say that Ms. Deng was in the hospital for “high blood pressure and diabetes.” She had been healthy since she took up Falun Gong years ago, and her family suspected that she had been tortured to the point of becoming injured or ill. They inquired about her exact prison term but the caller declined to reveal any details.

It is unclear when Ms. Deng was released from prison. She applied for her pension on October 19, 2022, but her application was denied. She tried again the next day, and was arrested by a group of officers who had been staked out near the local social security office. They pried open her door and snatched her house key. Ms. Deng was body searched and interrogated.

Chief Liu Zeqiang of the Xuanhua Police Station and his subordinates harassed Ms. Deng multiple times in December 2022, sometimes in the middle of the night. Once, they even scaled the fence around her yard and broke in. They also confiscated many of her personal belongings.

Ms. Deng was arrested again on March 15, 2023, while visiting her younger brother. She was released that afternoon. Weeks later, on April 4, captain He Chengjun from the Yongchuan District Domestic Security Office threatened to take Ms. Deng to the local court to face trial. To avoid further persecution, she went into hiding.

While on her way to do grocery shopping on December 7, 2023, Ms. Deng was arrested and taken to the Yongchuan District Detention Center. During the required physical exam, she was found to have a systolic blood pressure of over 200 mmHg (a normal range is 120 or lower) and a blood sugar level of 30 mmol/L (the normal fasting blood sugar level is 5.6 mmol/L). The guards took her to the hospital that night and she was released on December 12, 2023.

The police seized Ms. Deng at home on November 18, 2024, and took her to the hospital for a physical exam. The doctors measured her blood pressure twice and both times her systolic blood pressure was over 230 mmHg.

While Ms. Deng was sent home that day, the police returned the next day and attempted to take her to the Yongchuan District Detention Center. Her sister, who happened to be visiting, and other people present tried to the stop the police. During the standoff, Ms. Deng fainted and only then did the police relent. Her sister warned the police that she’d hold them responsible should anything happen to Ms. Deng.

Then-director Luo Mingquan of the Shengli Road Street Office and the Xuanhua Police Station harassed Ms. Deng again not long before her passing in December 2025, when she asked them to process the house deed transfer to her granddaughter.
