(Minghui.org) A 69-year-old woman in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province has had her pension suspended since November 18, 2021, when she completed a one-year prison term for her faith in Falun Gong.

Ms. Yu Shuxia, a retired pharmacist from the Pukou District Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, took up Falun Gong in 1996. She soon regained her health and became calmer and kinder. Unlike her colleagues, she declined to accept gifts (bribes) from patients, and treated everyone with respect.

After the communist regime launched the persecution of Falun Gong in July 1999, Ms. Yu was repeatedly targeted for holding firm to her faith. Prior to her one-year prison term, she was held at brainwashing centers multiple times and twice given forced labor. She suffered brutal torture during detention, including having her pubic hair pulled and her vagina stabbed with a mop handle. Once, while trying to escape arrest, Ms. Yu fell from a balcony and sustained a severe head injury and comminuted fractures.

Placed on Blacklist Since Beginning of Persecution

Shortly after the persecution began, Ms. Yu went to the provincial government to appeal for her right to freedom of belief. She was arrested and taken to a school, where she was forced to reveal her name, home address, and workplace. She has been on the government’s blacklist since then.

Cheng Yufang, then president of the Pukou District Chinese Medicine Hospital, brought people to harass Ms. Yu at home after she was released. He later held her at the hospital for eight months, during which time he suspended her pay and only gave her a 200-yuan stipend.

One Year and Two Months of Forced Labor (November 2001 – January 2002)

Ms. Yu boarded a train to Beijing in mid-October 2000 but was arrested on the train. She was held at the Nanjing City Detention Center for one month. Days after her release, she was arrested again and taken to a police-owned hotel.

Ms. Yu managed to escape and go to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong. She was arrested on Tiananmen Square with other Falun Gong practitioners. The police beat them with rubber clubs. One practitioner had his ears torn, and bled profusely.

While held at the Shijingshan Police Station in Beijing, Ms. Yu and other practitioners were ordered to reveal their home addresses. Those that refused to comply were subjected to savage beatings and verbal abuse. Ms. Yu was sometimes yanked out of her cell in the middle of the night to be interrogated. She urged the police to stop persecuting Falun Gong, but they ignored her.

Ms. Yu was later taken back to Nanjing and held at the same police-owned hotel. She did the Falun Gong exercises and the police moved her to the Nanjing City Detention Center. One morning she did not call out “Morning guards!” as required, and the guards handcuffed and shackled her for 22 days straight.

The Pukou District Police Department gave Ms. Yu one year of forced labor in mid-January 2001. The guards at the Judong Women’s Labor Camp instructed six prostitutes to take turns beating her for three days. Ms. Yu had dark circles under her eyes and severe swelling on her face and body as a result.

The prostitutes also pinched Ms. Yu’s thighs, pulled out her pubic hair, and poked her vagina with a mop handle. She screamed for help repeatedly, but no one responded. She almost died. The guards locked Ms. Yu in a storage room for over twenty days and did not let her out until her swelling subsided.

Ms. Yu’s term was set to expire in November 2001, but guard Zhou Ying fabricated “evidence” against her and extended her term by two months. She was forced to do hard labor for more than ten hours every day during those two months. She began to experience back pain and numbness in her feet. Guard Zhou accused her of faking illness. Ms. Yu’s condition kept worsening until she eventually had trouble walking. Only then was she taken to the hospital for a checkup. She was found to have bulging lumbar discs in the third, fourth, and fifth vertebrae.

Three Arrests 2002-2004, Injured While Trying to Escape

In August 2002, the Pukou District 610 Office held a brainwashing session in Zhujiang Town and took Ms. Yu there. She wrote a statement to renounce her faith against her will at one point, but later declared the statement null and void. In retaliation, the police held her at the brainwashing center for nearly three months and then at the Nanjing City Detention Center for another month.

Ms. Yu was finally released at the end of December 2002, only to be arrested again in April 2003 and held at the Nanjing City Detention Center for one month.

Prior to the communist regime’s annual political conferences in March 2004, the Pukou District 610 Office and secretary Li Rongcui of the Pukou District Chinese Medicine Hospital notified Ms. Yu on February 19 to attend a brainwashing session. She refused to go and a total of 23 people, including the local police and hospital president Wang Qiaozhuan, descended on her home after 8 p.m. that day.

Ms. Yu jumped from her balcony in a desperate attempt to escape and suffered comminuted fractures and a head injury. She was taken to the Nanjing Railway Hospital for treatment. She survived, but has walked with a limp since then. The Nanjing City 610 Office and the Pukou District 610 Office still kept harassing her. Ms. Yu firmly refused to write statements to renounce her faith.

Given 1.5 Years of Forced Labor in 2006

Ms. Yu was arrested again in April 2006 and taken to the Nanjing City Brainwashing Center, located in a hotel owned by the Bole Musical Instrument Factory. Two people were assigned to monitor her around the clock. They forced her to watch videos slandering Falun Gong every day and subjected her to various forms of abuse, including sleep deprivation, long-term standing within a tiny area the size of two floor tiles, and was denied the right to wash herself and change her underwear. They even put garbage, including rotten fruits, next to her to further torment her.

Every day, there were different people that arrived to “work on” Ms. Yu. Two retired judicial workers, one surnamed Zhang and another Pan, often interrogated her until late at night, sometimes into the early morning.

Ms. Yu, who still suffered from complications from her head injury, developed a brain disorder. She heard sounds in her head and felt dizzy and dazed. She often didn’t know where she was. Her legs were also extremely swollen.

After five months at the brainwashing center, Ms. Yu was given one and a half months of forced labor to be served at home. She was then released.

Another Arrest in 2008

Ms. Yu was arrested again on April 2008 after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was held at the Nanjing City Detention Center for one month and then moved to the Nanjing City Brainwashing Center. She went on a hunger strike for nine days and was released about two weeks later.

Sentenced to One Year in 2019

Ms. Yu was arrested on a bus for talking to a fellow passenger about Falun Gong. She was sentenced to one year in 2019 by the Xuanwu District Court. After she was released on November 18, 2021, the Pukou District Social Security Bureau ordered her to return the 60,000 yuan of retirement benefits issued during her imprisonment. She did not pay it back as it was legally hers, and they have since been suspending her pension.
