Having lost her husband to the persecution of their shared faith in Falun Gong, an 84-year-old woman in Yingkou City, Liaoning Province, also passed away on January 9, 2026.

Ms. Zhu Ruimin

Ms. Zhu Ruimin was a retired teacher of the Qinghua Elementary School. She took up Falun Gong in 1995 and soon recovered from a severe heart condition and a slipped disc. Because she held firm to her faith after the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution in 1999, she was repeatedly targeted.

Ms. Zhu and her husband, Mr. Wu Ruiting, were arrested on October 11, 2014, after the police, who had been shadowing them, spotted them talking to people about Falun Gong on the street. The couple was soon released on medical bail after being denied admission by the local detention center. They appeared in the Xishi District Court on April 8, 2015, and were both sentenced to four years on June 3, 2015. They appealed to the Yingkou City Intermediate Court, which ruled to uphold their sentences.

Ms. Zhu was taken back into custody and admitted to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on January 12, 2016. She was held in the division for elderly inmates and forced to make cotton swabs every day, despite her advanced age.

Upon hearing that the authorities would take him to the Dalian Prison, Mr. Wu, who had been out on bail, fled home on January 13, 2016, and went into hiding. Having been put on the police’s wanted list, he rarely left his temporary housing and struggled to cope with everyday life. He was overcome by his mental distress from the persecution and worrying about his wife.

Mr. Wu reunited with his wife after she was released on January 11, 2020. Ms. Zhu soon learned that her pension had been suspended since her prison admission in January 2016. Even after she was released, the benefits were not reinstated. By the time of her passing, she had at least 600,000 yuan of pension suspended during the ten-year period.

In 2021, Mr. Wu’s pension was also suspended. In order to keep hiding from the police, the couple rented a small apartment with no shower (they couldn’t afford to rent a better one).

The hardship from living a displaced life and the mental pressure from the persecution took a toll on Mr. Wu’s health. He became incapacitated, with difficulty walking and taking care of himself. He passed away on August 29, 2021. He was 81.

Ms. Zhu struggled to live on her own. She died on January 9, 2026, at the age of 84.
