(Minghui.org) A 70-year-old woman in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, was arrested on September 10, 2026, for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since July 1999.
Ms. Liu Ying was seized at home by four officers from the Xinhua Street Police Station. They have kept her family in the dark about her detention location.
Ms. Liu took up Falun Gong in September 1994. Since the onset of the persecution in 1999, she has been repeatedly targeted by the authorities. The persecution caused her husband tremendous mental distress. He struggled to cope with the pressure and eventually took his own life on May 20, 2007.
Two Arrests in 2000
Ms. Liu was first arrested on July 17, 2000, while working at a local cinema. She was taken to the Zhangbei County Police Department and then transferred to the Zhangbei County Detention Center for a nine-day criminal detention. The police extorted 5,000 yuan from her husband.
Ms. Liu went to Beijing on October 5, 2000, to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. She was arrested on Tiananmen Square the next morning and taken back home. She was detained at the Zhangjiakou City Detention Center for 54 days. The detention center charged her 750 yuan for the “stay,” and Qiaoxi Police Station officers extorted another 5,000 yuan from her husband.
After Ms. Liu was released, her employer, the Zhangjiakou City Cultural Bureau, didn’t allow her to work and suspended her pay for two and a half months. She was demoted from the deputy manager position and disqualified from receiving an annual pay raise.
Forced to Attend Two Brainwashing Sessions in 2001
Ms. Liu was arrested in January 2001 and held at a brainwashing session for six days.
Right after she left work around midnight on May 10, 2001, Ms. Liu was arrested by residential committee staffers and detained for three days. The residential committee also charged her 160 yuan for her meals.
Five officers broke into Ms. Liu’s home on August 19, 2001, and took her to another brainwashing session. Her employer was forced to pay over 1,700 yuan for the 11 days of her “stay” there.
One More Arrest in 2004
Ms. Liu was arrested at work again around 8:30 p.m. on December 20, 2004. The police searched both her office and home, and confiscated her Falun Gong books, radios, tape recorder, and a flashlight.
Ms. Liu was booked into the Zhangshi Lockup the following day. Fifteen days later, she was transferred to the Shalingzi Brainwashing Center, where she was held for another 23 days. The police extorted 8,000 yuan from her husband.
Detained Prior to the Beijing Olympics
On July 20, 2008, just weeks before the Beijing Summer Olympics, Ms. Liu was arrested again and held at the Zhangshi Brainwashing Center, also known as the Zhangshi Legal Education School, for 67 days.
When Ms. Liu was released on September 24, the residential committee refused to return her confiscated ID.
Harassment and Arrest in 2015
Several officers from the Xinhua Street Police Station broke into Ms. Liu’s home on the evening of June 18, 2015. They left after she urged them not to participate in the persecution.
Qiaoxi Police Station officers again broke into Ms. Liu’s home on June 25, 2015, and arrested her. She was detained at the Shisanli Lockup for 10 days.
