(Minghui.org) Mr. Li Yuandong has become extremely emaciated, with severe injury in his lower back, while serving an 8.5-year prison term for his faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.
Mr. Li, 58, used to work at the Guangdong Port Authority in Maoming City, Guangdong Province. He was fired from his job because he refused to renounce Falun Gong. To avoid persecution, he moved to Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong, and landed a new job here.
Mr. Li was arrested in Guangzhou on the early evening of July 9, 2019, for making and distributing Falun Gong informational materials. He was sentenced to eight years and six months by the Haizhu District Court in Guangzhou on August 31, 2021.
Mr. Li was admitted to the Beijiang Prison in March 2022 and assigned to the ninth division. From April to June 2022, because he refused to attend brainwashing sessions, the guards chained his handcuff and shackle together (see the following illustration of the torture). He was unable to stand straight or take showers. He also had to walk downstairs from the fourth floor to the first floor for three meals every day. An inmate was arranged to monitor him around the clock.

Starting in July 2025, the prison began subjecting Mr. Li to even more brutal torture, including starvation, sleep deprivation, and denied restroom use. He has also been denied visits with his family and subjected to constant verbal abuse.
Due to the limited amount of food he was given at every meal, Mr. Li became extremely emaciated. To make matters worse, the guards instigated the inmates to wake Mr. Li up every five to 20 minutes at night, preventing him from sleeping well—if at all.
Director Huo Linyin oversees the ninth division. He assigned guard Duan Shaoming to “work on” Mr. Li specifically.
After Yu Hongkui, the former Beijiang Prison deputy warden who was in charge of persecuting Falun Gong practitioners, died of a heart attack, Xiao Youyuan, the former Qingyuan Prison deputy warden, took over Yu’s job.
Both the Beijiang Prison and Sihui Prison are two major men’s prisons in Guangdong Province to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. Upon the practitioners’ admission, the guards first ordered them to write statements to renounce Falun Gong and then forced them to attend classes to study Buddhism. Those who resisted the brainwashing would be subjected to various torture methods, including sleep deprivation, beating, denied restroom use, and involuntary drug administration.
A guard at Beijiang Prison once said, “There has been no one (Falun Gong practitioners) who left the prison without being transformed.”
