A 63-year-old woman in Jiangbei District, Chongqing died on April 3, 2026, after enduring decades of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Qin Li, born on March 1, 1963, suffered from pharyngitis, rhinitis, nasal polyps, duodenitis, pyelonephritis, and hyperthyroidism. Her hands trembled and her eyes bulged. Shortly after she took up Falun Gong in 1996, all of her symptoms disappeared.
Ms. Qin held firm to her faith after the Chinese communist regime launched a nationwide campaign against Falun Gong in July 1999. She was arrested multiple times in the years that followed. She was held in a brainwashing center three times and given two prison terms and a labor camp term.
Sentenced to 8 Years Following Arrest in 2003
After she was laid off by the Jiangbei District Foundry, Ms. Qin landed a job at a real estate company. As she was taking a client to see a rental property on February 26, 2003, police officers arrested her.
Ms. Qin was held at a brainwashing center and subjected to various forms of abuse, including sleep deprivation and forced standing on a high chair. Then 40, her hair turned gray overnight due to stress.
Months later, Ms. Qin was sentenced to eight years in Chongqing Women’s Prison. A few years into her term, her 49-year-old husband fell ill and passed away. She was not allowed to attend his funeral. Their 17-year-old daughter handled his funeral all by herself.
Given One Year of Forced Labor Following Arrest in 2011
After Ms. Qin was released in 2009 (two years ahead of time), she began to offer tutoring classes at home to make a living. She was arrested again while teaching on December 26, 2011, and put in a brainwashing center. In April 2012, she was given one year of forced labor, but soon released on April 19 because the labor camp system was to be abolished.
Arrested Again in 2014 and Sentenced to 3.5 Years
Ms. Qin went to Fengdu County (which is under the jurisdiction of Chongqing) on November 11, 2014, to attend a relative’s funeral. When she was waiting at the Fengdu Train Station the next day for her train back home, the security officers scanned her flagged ID and found out she was a Falun Gong practitioner. She was taken back to Chongqing and put in a brainwashing center. On December 7, 2014, she was transferred to the Jiangbei District Detention Center.
The Jiangbei District Procuratorate issued a formal arrest warrant for Ms. Qin on January 9, 2015, and indicted her despite her lawyer’s request to drop her case. She stood trial at the Jiangbei District Court on June 15, 2015, and was sentenced to three and a half years on July 24, 2015. Her appeal was rejected in November that year and she was subsequently admitted to the Chongqing Women’s Prison.
Ms. Qin’s sentencing dealt a blow to her grandmother, who had been relying on her for care. The 102-year-old woman passed away in April 2016, and Ms. Qin wasn’t allowed to see her one last time. Ms. Qin’s parents, especially her father in his 80s, also struggled with poor health when she was imprisoned.
In Chongqing Women’s Prison, guards Tang Anzhi and Li Xiaojuan tortured her. She developed problems with her liver, gallbladder, and intestines.
Pension Suspension and Constant Harassment in Final Years
Ms. Qin was hospitalized several times after her release in May 2018. One surgery took over 11 hours. The local social security bureau suspended her pension and only gave her 800 yuan of living stipend every month.
The police and residential committee staff members also kept harassing Ms. Qin, who lived with her mother Ms. Li Zhangqiong.
Ms. Li, who also practices Falun Gong, was given one and a half years of forced labor in 2000 and four years in 2003. She was given one year of forced labor in 2011 for talking to people about Falun Gong, but was allowed to serve the time at home.
