(Minghui.org) A 79-year-old retired teacher in Huanggang City, Hubei Province, was sentenced to two years on April 20, 2026, for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been targeted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.
Ms. Liu Juhua was arrested on August 25, 2025, and put in criminal detention the next day. Her arrest was approved on September 9, and she was indicted by the Wuxue City Procuratorate at an unknown date. Wuxue City is under the jurisdiction of Huanggang.
The Wuxue City Court heard the case on February 10, 2026, and convicted Ms. Liu on April 20. She previously served three forced labor terms and one prison term, totaling nine years, for practicing Falun Gong. In her latest prison sentence, the prosecutor cited her second forced labor term and her prior prison term as evidence against her and accused her of being a “repeat offender.”
Past Persecution
Ms. Liu was the Director of the Teaching and Research Department of the Chibi Education Group of the Huangzhou District. She published dozens of academic papers and won many awards. In March 1997, after her daughter was diagnosed with congenital heart disease and a partially dislocated kneecap that led to her leg muscles atrophying, she discovered Falun Gong while looking for exercises to improve her health. Upon witnessing her daughter’s speedy recovery after learning Falun Gong, she was surprised to find that her own back problems and uterine cancer disappeared within months.
After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Liu was arrested at least seven times. She was given two 1.5-year and one two-year labor camp terms. She also served a four-year prison term. She was subjected to brutal torture while serving time at the Shayang Forced Labor Camp, the Baimalong Forced Labor Camp, and the Hubei Province Women’s Prison. She suffered two mental breakdowns and almost died.
In addition to being incarcerated, Ms. Liu was also subjected to financial persecution by having her pension suspended. She was under long term surveillance and harassed during major holidays or political events. Her daughter was forced by the school administration to drop out of college in her junior year. Ms. Liu’s mother was so traumatized that she stopped eating and passed away in 2013.
