A 71-year-old woman in Shuangyashan City, Heilongjiang Province died on June 8, 2026, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Liu Duanhui, born in 1955, was first arrested on May 2, 2020, for distributing Falun Gong informational materials. The police raided her home and released her under house arrest after an unknown amount of time of detention. She was indicted in mid-November 2020 and went into hiding shortly before she was set to stand trial on December 24, 2020.
Ms. Liu was arrested again on August 19, 2023, at her temporary residence in Dalian City, Liaoning Province, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was extradited to Heilongjiang Province the next day.
The Shuangyashan City Detention Center declined to admit Ms. Liu after the required physical exam revealed that she had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Instead of releasing her, the police put her under house arrest at an undisclosed location. Her family later found out that she was eventually moved back to the detention center.
Ms. Liu stood trial on August 25, 2023, and was sentenced to one year with a 5,000-yuan fine. Her appeal was rejected on November 29 that year, and she was admitted to the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison (located in the capital city of Harbin) on May 14, 2024.
Ms. Liu’s prison sentence was extended by several weeks, with her term ending on September 4, 2024. Her family was unable to pick her up that day, as officers from the Ganjingzi Street Police Station in Dalian City seized her as soon as she stepped out of the prison gate. They took her back to Dalian and put her under criminal detention at the police station for 15 days.
After she was finally released, Ms. Liu suffered worsening health and died on June 8, 2026.
