(Minghui.org) A 64-year-old woman in Qingdao City, Shandong Province, was recently sentenced to four years in prison because she practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Meng Huiling was arrested around 5:30 p.m. on January 12, 2026, when she stepped outside her apartment building to pick up groceries she ordered online. Seven officers from the Xuejiadao Police Station surrounded her and forced her to take them to her home. They confiscated her Falun Gong books, portrait of the founder of Falun Gong, and several Falun Gong-themed paintings.

Her daughter tried to stop the police from arresting her, but they threatened to arrest the younger woman as well.

The police took Ms. Meng to the police station and photographed her. They attempted to collect her fingerprints. She strongly resisted and they didn’t succeed. She had to sleep on the concrete floor overnight.

During the few days that Ms. Meng was held at the police station, she was only given a few steamed buns and some water. When the police took her to the Qingdao City Second Detention Center on January 15, she was denied admission due to a lung condition and an irregular heartbeat. The police took her to another hospital and forced a doctor there to fabricate a report stating that she was healthy. She was then admitted to the detention center.

The police submitted Ms. Meng’s case to the local procuratorate on February 10. Her family hired five lawyers for her, but two of them were forced to withdraw from the case after they were threatened by the Bei District Justice Bureau.

The Huangdao District Court held two hearings of Ms. Meng’s case on June 10 and July 22, and sentenced her to four years on August 14.
