Ms. Ge Chunling

Ms. Ge was held in high regard by her bosses, and was considered a very kind and good worker. Her friends and family all witnessed the tremendous changes in her behavior and attitude after she started practicing Falun Gong.

Repeatedly detained and subjected to brainwashing

Since the persecution of Falun Gong began in July 1999, Ms. Ge has been persecuted many times and was fired from her job. On July 21, 1999, she went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong, and was arrested by the police at Shanhaiguan. She was then taken to Shanhaiguan train station.

Guo Yunchang, a former Party secretary of Jinzhou Railway Eastern Vehicle Section, and director Xiao Xingren gathered nine Falun Gong practitioners including Ms. Ge and organized brainwashing sessions for them from July 23 to August 1. The practitioners' were forced to listen to people reading newspaper reports defaming Falun Gong and then they were made to criticize the practice.

A lot of Ms. Ge's work colleagues, from Party officials to employees, took part in the brainwashing sessions, working in shifts to force the practitioners to write their “understandings” on Falun Gong and then to hand in all of their Falun Gong books and materials. Guo and Xiao also had Ms. Ge demoted from her position at work.

In early October 1999, Ms. Ge went to Beijing again to appeal for Falun Gong. To stop other practitioners from following suit, Huang Shihui, an officer in the security section, organized Pang Qiang, head of the security section, to imprison practitioners in the hostel on October 26 and forced them to undergo brainwashing sessions. This was authorized by Guo and Xiao.

Employees in the security section, as well as two guards, took turns watching over the practitioners, as they were subjected to the brainwashing sessions. Ms. Ge was also taken to this brainwashing center after she was arrested for appealing for Falun Gong. The practitioners were detained in this brainwashing center for two weeks, and then Ms. Ge was taken back to her hometown. Before they were released, senior management invited Tian, the director of the Jinzhou Railway Police Department, and other police officers to threaten and intimidate the practitioners. As punishment, Ms. Ge's wages were suspended and every month she was only given around 200 yuan for living expenses.

Ms. Ge was arrested by police in Beijing on May 13, 2000. She was returned to her hometown by officers from the railway police department, and was detained at the railway detention center. Five days later, she was transferred to Jinzhou No. 2 Detention Center, where she was detained for a month.

During this period of time, Guo and Xiao wrote a letter to Ms. Ge in the detention center notifying her of her employer's decision to expel her from her job. However, officials at the detention center did not give the letter to Ms. Ge, as they deemed it unnecessary to do so. In early June, Ms. Ge was sentenced to one and a half years in Masanjia Women's Forced Labor Camp in Shenyang City. The management at her workplace sent another letter to Ms. Ge in Masanjia informing her that she had been removed from her job.

Severely tortured and abused in Masanjia Women's Forced Labor Camp

Guard Zhang Xiurong and others tortured Ms. Ge for over 20 days in a row in July 2000. She was made to squat for 24 hours and was not allowed to drink, sleep or go to the toilet. In May 2001, she was put in the “strict management team,” where she was not allowed to use the toilet for long periods of time. As a result, her whole body became swollen and her heart rate slowed down. She became very weak, but was still forced to carry out strenuous labor.

Struggling to survive financially

When Ms. Ge was finally released from the labor camp and returned home, Party secretary Li Jingfa demanded that she write a guarantee statement promising not to practice Falun Gong anymore, or else she could not resume her job. Ms. Ge refused to comply and therefore was not reinstated at her workplace. She was forced to do part-time jobs to make ends meet.

In December 2008, Xu Zhijian, the director of Jinzhou Railway Eastern Vehicle Section, gave Ms. Ge's cell phone number to officers at the Jinzhou Police Department. At the same time, he passed on her personal information as well as other practitioners' information to the officials at the Political and Legal Affairs Committee in an attempt to further persecute her and her family members. They tapped her phone and followed her movements closely for two to three months.

Forced to leave home

Ms. Ge left her hometown in November 2010 to avoid further harassment from the authorities. When she contacted her former workplace, asking for her employment files, Xu Zhijian was able to track down her whereabouts and reported it to the Jinzhou Police Department. Ms. Ge 's cell phone was then tapped and her movements were monitored again.

On November 26, 2012, Ms. Ge was reported to the authorities when she was seen talking to people about the persecution of Falun Gong at Wujiazhuang, Jinyuan District in Taiyuan. She was arrested by police from the criminal division and was detained at Taiyuan Detention Center. During a body search, police found a key on her. They then located the place where she was residing and ransacked the house.
