Attachment to Political Outcomes Can Interfere with Cultivation
(Minghui.org) The Taiwan 2014 local elections to select city mayors, city councilors, chiefs of indigenous districts in municipalities, and others were held in November.
I reached voting age this year, and I took it for granted that I was not biased against any of the political parties. However, the practitioners in my family, as well as myself, were affected by some of the election activities, and our minds were in turmoil.
One of my relatives was busy soliciting votes for one party. When she approached me, I was very uneasy and decided to leave immediately.
Then, one morning when I was sending righteous thoughts, she was talking with another family member about the candidates she favored. I couldn't calm down and thought, “That party is so strange, always wooing old people and tricking them. This elderly lady was easily fooled into favoring a party that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) promotes.”
I kept imagining different scenarios and got angrier and angrier. Suddenly I realized that I had such a strong attachment while sending righteous thoughts.
A few days ago people campaigning for a certain candidate approached us in a farmer's market. When I was ready to leave, my mother said, “They are supporting a candidate from the xxx party.” At once I had a good opinion of the candidate, even though I had no idea what his political views were.
Actually, I cannot judge any candidate unless I truly have firsthand knowledge about him or her. I know there are good people and bad people in any party.
“In addition, the very reason for people to get into politics is their desire to make a name for themselves and for selfish gains. It’s only that back then human society’s moral values were still quite strong and the people who lived at that time were all in that environment, so the people who were in politics simply didn’t appear as unscrupulous as the people in politics today. So politics has been filthy since its emergence. But it’s true that in political circles there have been some upright persons who are concerned about the country and the people, though they are only a drop in the ocean.” (“No Politics” in Essentials for Further Advancement II)
Winning or Losing Is Unimportant to Practitioners
I was puzzled and anxious about the winning or losing of a given party from time to time. Then I would tell myself, “Doesn't our Master arrange everything in the world? Do I really believe in that as a practitioner?” Thus, I did not take it for granted that practitioners could change the political outcome. I should cultivate myself and cherish whatever Master arranged for us. Then we would be worthy of the title of practitioners in the Fa-rectification period.
Of course I can go to the polls. But, as a practitioner, we should be responsible for our choices and not have any attachments.
“... If still more Taiwanese Dafa disciples haven’t done well in regards to a certain issue, then it will indeed impact the state of affairs in that place. Of course, I’m not saying that Taiwan’s Dafa disciples haven’t done well; some things are old force interference. For example, if our Dafa disciples didn’t previously have human attachments that caused them to think divisively along Blue-Green political party lines, the situation would be better today. I brought this up repeatedly, right from the start, since I saw what the consequences would be. But, some students give more weight to political affiliations than to cultivation. Human attachments are indeed hard to remove.” (“Fa Teaching Given at the 2010 New York Fa Conference”)
If too many practitioners hold human notions, we may affect the progress of the Fa-rectification. We should learn from past mistakes and thus avoid falling into the same old trap again or we will forever regret what we did.
After discussing with my family members that are also practitioners, we realized that Master was so benevolent that he always gave us chances again and again to correct our actions and minds. We should pay more attention to each thought and idea.
I hope that practitioners facing a similar situation let go of human notions and keep up the progress of Fa-rectification.
