Woman, 70, Emaciated after Seven Months of Detention for Her Faith
(Minghui.org) A 70-year-old woman has become emaciated after seven months of detention for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body spiritual tradition that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Gu Xiaohua, a resident of Beijing, was arrested at home on April 17, 2019. The police deceived her into opening the door by pretending to be property management staff members from her apartment building. Her Falun Gong books and related materials, as well as the 4,100 yuan in cash from her pocket, were confiscated.
The police didn’t inform Ms. Gu’s family of her arrest until weeks later.
Ms. Gu’s family hired a lawyer for her. The lawyer applied for bail for her, but the request was rejected.
The local procuratorate has returned Ms. Gu’s case to the police, requiring more evidence.
According to the lawyer who visited her at the Chaoyang Detention Center, Ms. Gu lost a significant amount of weight during the past seven months. As the guards were watching his conversation with Ms. Gu closely, she was unable to tell him what abuse she had been subjected to.
When Ms. Gu’s family asked the police to return the 4,100 yuan in cash taken from her during the home raid, the police initially denied having any knowledge of it. After Ms. Gu’s family made consistent efforts in asking for the money, the police finally returned 3,700 yuan.
