(Minghui.org) Two residents in Zaozhuang City, Shandong Province, were sentenced to four years for practicing Falun Gong, Minghui.org recently learned.

Ms. Liu Yanli, 59, and Mr. Li Qiang, were arrested on September 23, 2025. They have since been held at the Zaozhuang City Detention Center, where 12 Falun Gong practitioners were also detained at the time. Both practitioners were convicted by the Zaozhuang City Court in mid-October 2026, and they have appealed the verdicts. Other details about their cases are unclear.

Ms. Liu’s Past Persecution

Ms. Liu, born in April 1967, used to work at the Xuecheng District Accounting Administration. She took up Falun Gong in June 1999, and soon recovered from many long-term ailments, including heart and stomach conditions, as well as dizziness.

When the Chinese Communist Party launched the nationwide persecution one month later, she went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice her faith. She was arrested and later escorted back to Zaozhuang. She was detained for 15 days and her family was forced to pay over 200 yuan for her living expenses while she was detained.

Ms. Liu was arrested at work on November 15, 2001, and forced to attend a 15-day brainwashing session. After she was released, she was subjected to long term surveillance and harassment. To prevent her from going to Beijing to appeal again, her employer made her work on holidays and forbade her from traveling anywhere.

Ms. Liu was forced to live away from home on September 6, 2006, when she escaped a police attempt to arrest her. The police and 610 Office agents frequently harassed her husband, mother, and two sisters, and pressured them to tell them where she was.

Ms. Liu was arrested in September 2011, and was sentenced to one year at the Shandong Province First Women’s Forced Labor Camp. She was brutally tortured and forced to work long hours without pay. The guards verbally abused her whenever she failed to finish the daily quota. She was also deprived of sleep, and was not allowed to use the restroom or take showers.

Ms. Liu returned home on August 15, 2013, only to again face constant harassment by the community workers.
