Ms. Ren Yuhong
A 58-year-old woman in Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province, died on June 19, 2026, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Ren Yuhong took up Falun Gong in 1996 and became a kinder and more considerate person. After the Chinese Communist Party launched a nationwide campaign against Falun Gong in July 1999, she held firm to her faith and was repeatedly targeted. She was sentenced to four years following an arrest in 2018. After she was released in 2022, she faced frequent harassment by the police.
Earliest Persecution
Ms. Ren’s employer, Daqing Oil Field, demoted her from an office manager to a mailroom employee shortly after the persecution began. Unable to cope with the persecution, her husband divorced her. She struggled to raise their son alone.
Ms. Ren went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in December 2000 and was arrested. The Beijing police locked her in a metal cage and later forced her to stand barefoot in the snow.
Ms. Ren was at work on April 21, 2003, when her company’s security guard and a group of officers seized her and took her straight to the Hongweixing Brainwashing Center. Her son, an elementary pupil, was left with no one to care for him. The police also raided her home and confiscated her laptop, laser printer, and other valuables totaling over 8,000 yuan.
The brainwashing center guards beat Ms. Ren, verbally abused her, and deprived her of sleep. After she was released, she was still harassed by the police and local community workers.
Sentenced to Four Years in Hospital Ward
Ms. Ren was arrested again on November 9, 2018, during a police sweep of local Falun Gong practitioners. That was her scheduled last workday before retirement. Six plainclothes officers seized her as soon as she stepped outside her apartment building that morning to go to work. They searched her bag and snatched her home key. They raided her home and confiscated her Falun Gong books, computer, printer, and other items.
While held at the Daqing City Detention Center, Ms. Ren was ordered to watch videos slandering Falun Gong. She refused to comply. Gu Songhai, then head of the Heilongjiang Province 610 Office, and Yang Bo, a section chief of the Heilongjiang Province Public Security Bureau, verbally abused her and instructed the guards to torture her. She was not given any daily necessities, not even toilet paper.
The Ranghulu District Procuratorate issued a formal arrest warrant for Ms. Ren around November 29, 2018. She was released on bail on February 26, 2019, after she was found to have dangerously high blood pressure.
Prosecutor Feng Guang pressured Ms. Ren’s family into driving her to the Ranghulu District Court on March 27, 2019, to re-interrogate her and record the session. Feng claimed the initial interrogation of her was not recorded.
Ms. Ren refused to comply and also declared to nullify the statement she was forced to write before to renounce Falun Gong. She then suddenly had a seizure and lost consciousness. Feng accused her of faking before calling an ambulance.
The doctors at the Longnan Hospital recommended an inpatient case because Ms. Ren was having dangerously high blood pressure. Feng ignored the advice and took her to the Daqing Oil Field Hospital for another checkup. The results turned out to be the same, and Feng had to release her on bail.
Feng indicted Ms. Ren on March 29, 2019. Her family received a notice on May 30 saying her court date was set for June 3. She did not show up in court because she didn’t break any law. The police put her on the wanted list, and she was forced to go into hiding.
The police tracked her down and followed her to her mother’s home on the afternoon of July 10, 2019. They deceived her mother into opening the door and attempted to drag Ms. Ren away. She passed out during the struggle and was taken to the Longnan Hospital.
Three officers watched her in the hospital. They kept her handcuffed all day long. The doctors there didn’t inform her of what injections they were giving her.
Presiding judge Zhang Haiyan and judge Zhao Yuhua from the Ranghulu District Court, as well as prosecutor Feng, held a trial of Ms. Ren’s case in her hospital ward around July 20, 2019. She was sentenced to four years with a 20,000-yuan fine at the end of her trial. The judges also barred her from filing an appeal.
Abused in Prison
Ms. Ren was admitted to the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison a few days after the conviction. Her employer stopped her pension around the same time.
The prison guards forced Ms. Ren to sit on a small bench for long hours. They also beat and verbally abused her. She developed a tumor in her uterus. A guard called her family in December 2019, ordering them to come to the prison to pay 30,000 yuan to cover her surgery cost. After her family paid the money, the prison canceled the operation on the grounds that her blood pressure shot up upon seeing her loved ones.
Ms. Ren later still had a surgery in the prison hospital. She became very weak afterwards. She struggled to breathe and fell into a coma on multiple occasions. She recalled that once she was about to sip water from a cup when she suddenly passed out. After she came to, she saw her bed was wet, and an inmate said she spilled all the water on the bed.
Frequent Harassment After Prison Release
Ms. Ren was released ahead of time in 2022, only to face frequent harassment by the police and local community workers. Over dozens of local Falun Gong practitioners were arrested on May 18, 2023. While she was not arrested that day, four plainclothes officers stayed in her home for half a day, not allowing her to step outside.
In 2023, the local social security office ordered Ms. Ren to return over 20,000 yuan of pension benefits between November 2018 (when she became eligible for pension) and July 2019 (when her pension was stopped). They threatened to not reinstate her pension if she defied their order. She had no way but to pay the “debt.” Her pension was reinstated in 2024.
The relentless persecution further damaged Ms. Ren’s health. She was diagnosed with diabetes. She fell into a coma around May 19, 2026, and never regained consciousness. She died one month later.
